Okay, the faster you go the more gas you burn. Of course, you will get there faster, but you have a better chance of running out of gas. If your tank is almost empty...drive slower....it conserves gas. Drive at a steady speed. If you change speeds a lot you will also burn more gas.

When the tank gauge hits empty you generally have a 20 mile reserve. It is not advised to let the tank get that empty because of water and dirt in the bottom of the tank, it's a good way to at least plug up your fuel filter; it is a good idea to start looking for a gas station when you hit a quarter tank. Most fuel is used during acceleration, so accelerate moderately and drive moderately ... and follow the first gas pump sign you see.

The best fuel economy will be obtained when the car is driven at a modest speed in the highest gear possible. Keep trying to lift your foot off the gas pedal without losing any speed. Maintain a steady pace wherever possible; avoid traffic jams and frequent stops and starts in urban areas. Time your driving to get through stop lights without stopping. If you do have to stop, accelerate away from a stop light moderately. No jack rabbit starts or high revving of the engine.
One time the Hiway Patrol stopped me in TX for going too fast. He asked why I was in such a hurry. I responded with the comment that I was trying to get to the next gas station before I ran out of gas. He let me go.
