Honestly, let the dog pick the name I know, how the heck do you do that? When I got my dog and two cats I had no idea what name them. I finally got a list of 5-6 names and sat in the same room with the dog or cat when I said the words I waited for a reaction from the animal, believe it or not it works. I went through 5 names for my dog when he was a puppy no reaction at all as soon as I said the 6th word, he whipped around and looked at me. I know it sounds crazy but it's true. Keep it as short as possible so when you yell at them, it's easy to say quickly! lol

Remember that dogs need names with only one or two syllables. It is hard for them to learn their name, if it is something like "Powhatan-Pocohontas-JohnSmith."
On the other hand, it is very easy for them to learn that they are "Princess," "Honey," "Spot," etc.
Wait until you get the dog, then decide what to name him according to one of his actions, someone or something he reminds you of, his personality, or his physical appearance. That's what we've done every time, and we never regretted the name we picked. And remember, you can always change his name later. But if you do, change it to something VERY similar sounding, or he'll have no idea who you're talking to. How would you like it if you could kind of communicate with somebody who spoke a different language, and all of a sudden, instead of calling you "Amigo," they began saying "Hermano."

I don't think you'd like it. I sure wouldn't.

Can't help you with actually picking a name. If I put any unusual names up here, other people would see them, use them, and soon, it would no longer be an unusual name.

Hope I helped.

Naming your puppy should be fun. Make sure his name will match him even in his adult years. For example, if you name him baby it wont match his BIG body. There are plenty of websites with different dog names. Oh yeah and dogs usually respond better to names with one or two syllables. A long name might confuse the dog.

I'm partial to Mojo (means magic charm), as that is what I named my dog. It's fairly unusual, haven't met another one. We also considered Obi (heart); Finn (the character from Great Expectations); Pax (peace); Nyx (nigt); Kiyo (it's a dragon name from Japanese mythology - my dog's registered name is "Red Dragon"), Cloud, Rain, and Domino among others. I basically found a name website that had name meanings from multiple languages. Then I started searching for words that I thought were meaningful (like whirlwind, playful, heart, love, etc).

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your new puppy as much as I do mine!!!

If you can look at his parents' names as well as his pedegree. Those always have fun names. That's what I did when we got my golden retriever several years ago. Congrats on the new puppy! I'm getting a couple of shepherds later this year! They are so much fun!

Atticus (that's Jake Gyllenhall's dog's name and it really works for a German Shepard).

Maximillian (call him Max for short!) It means "the great" or "the greatest". I think it would be fitting for a german shepard. It's latin, but it is a popular name in Germany.

How about Rin tin tin!
Really, I always like to see what their personality is first... It can go a few days before you name them.
"Try on " some names for a while. One will just seem right.
