The right lane is normally where cars enter and exit the freeway, so it's slower. Because of carpool lanes and left exits, the left lane can be a pain as well. I tend to stay out in the middle somewhere, because there's less people changing lanes or getting on and off the freeway. During the afternoon commute, I don't even take the freeway because if I do it takes me almost 1.5 hours to get home, compared with 45-50 minutes if I take backroads. This isn't the case all over southern California, though. Some people have no choice but the freeway. As far as trucks gaining distance on you, it doesn't make much difference, because you'll eventually catch them anyway. The whole freeway moves at roughly the same pace. The thing that gets me is the car chases. How can one guy do 70 during the afternoon commute when everyone else is doing 20?

The lane to the right of the far left lane moves the quickest.

If I'm in really heavy traffic, it all depends on where I'm going. On the highway, I usually stick in the right lane so I can make the exit. But on city streets, if I know I have to make a left turn, I'll stay in the left lane so I can easily access the turning lane without having to hold up traffic. If I'm turning right, I'll stick to the right.

I try and pick the fastest moving lane. Its usually the left lane but not always. Be safe when you change lanes and be patient as well.

there is no fastest lane, or everyone would crowd into it, making it NOT the fastest lane.
