Some states require that the plates be turned in to the state that issued them, others do not have that requirement. So check with Ohio and Texas if they need their plates back. If those states do NOT require you to turn them back into the state, I would destroy them. Basically that protects you from someone else getting a hold of them and using them for some unscrupulous reason or putting them on a stolen car.

hmm.... I kept the plates from my first car.

My second car, I brought the plates to the DMV because I had just renewed the stickers and was in a car accident. So I needed a refund and they needed the plate as proof.

I guess you can either keep them of throw them away, but if you throw them out, make sure that they can't be re-used by someone else.

it is not approximately being "old": they must be "formally" removed from the database of the state on which they have been issued. automobile proprietors are meant to make optimistic the licenses plates the place removed from the gadget in the past throwing away and/or promoting the plates. If the plates are nonetheless registered to somebody on your loved ones you are able to no longer sell them for the reason that that ought to deliver you many of issues (especially in the event that they are used throughout a criminal offense).

In Manitoba, old plates, from here and out-of-province, get recycled by the Shriners. In other provinces and states, if turn-in is not required, put them in with your recycling.

Some states require you to turn them in when you register/title the vehicle. Some don't, best to check with your state's DMV.

Unless you are asked to turn them in, keep them in the garage or throw them away.
