I need a surname that is obviously English, but not so ridiculous sounding that it can't be used as someone's name. I'm writing a story set in the late 1800's in England, and the character in question is a jewler.

you need to go onto the internet and lok in the history pages somewhere as all natural english surnames came from whatever trade you worked in for instance "a cooper" was a barrel maker

How about "Mason," or "Carpenter" or "Plummer."

Just for laughs.

Look at the map of England and use the name of a town, like Lillington, or something along those lines.
