You can give a sympathy card - I've seen several specific for animals - at Hallmark and Carlton card stores. Depending on how well you know them, you can give them a copy of the pet loss support information I have attached in the sources. There are also many good books and support groups, if the grief gets too much to handle.
Good luck.

A card saying you know how hard it is to lose a beloved member of the family. If you want to do something more, make a donation in the dog's name to the humane society or to a rescue fund for the breed of the dog that died.
They'll love that.

I would make a donation to a pet organization in the name of the pet and send them a card letting them know. This would be especially nice if the dog died from a particular disease and you could contribute to an organization that is doing research into that disease.

A sympathy card with a donation to a local shelter would be very thoughtful. They might feel a little better, knowing that a homeless animal was being helped in the name of their dog.

When my neighbors elder golden died we sent a donation to golden retriever rescue in honor of the dog that had passed.
If you don't know the breed you can always send a donation to a local humane society in honor or their dog.

There are sympathy cards for pets. My friend gave me one after I had to put my Akita down and I thought it was so thoughtful. Many people do not realize how much a pet means to you.
I would get the card.

I think it would be nice to get a sympathy card specifically for the loss of a pet. You don't have to say much, just sending your sympathies is what they probably will appreciate now.
You're sweet. :-)
