If you visit another state and buy something there, you will be charge the sales tax of that state. Each state has a different sales tax. The following states have NO sales tax:

Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.

You can avoid paying the sales tax depending on the business. For example, if you're buying a $10,000 diamond ring, the jewlery store is usually more than happy to take your money (without sales tax) and mail you the diamond ring. If you're shady - you just don't report that. If you're honest, then you pay your state's sales tax when you do your income taxes. It's called a "use tax." The use tax applies to Internet sales as well.

If you buy at a retail outlet out of state and that state has a sales tax, then you are required to pay it, at that state's rate.

If you order something online from out of state, you'll pay sales tax if the company has a physical presence (like a retail outlet or a distribution center) in your state. For example, if you order a book online from barnesandnoble.com, you'll almost always be charges sales tax, since they have stores in most states. But if you order the same book from amazon.com, you usually won't pay sales tax since they don't have facilities in most states.

if you buy something out of state, you pay that state's sales tax. In some cases, states have sales tax holidays, when they charge zero sales tax.
