I am a Roman Catholic. I am tired of being the butt of jokes from libs, evangelicals, just about everyone. My ethnicity is Italian and religion is very important to my country. Yet in these hyper-sensative days when you can't say anything for fear of insulting someone it's perfectly acceptable to stereotype (The Sopranos) make fun of the Virgin Mary and even Christ Himself. Why should I have to put up with this when everyone else would be hollering "Hate Crime" over only about 1/20 of what I put up with on a daily basis.

bettiera,
Would you be so flip if I were black or hispanic or Islamic or female or any other of the "protected status" groups out there? I try to live my life with love for everyone. I have been married for 26 years, even that is frowned upon now, monogamy is bad I guess. I guess all I'm saying is why is it ok to belittle one group but not others?

LazyTime, I didn't bring on the priest scandal, in fact I was molested by a priest as a child so don't even go there. I think all child molestors should be put in prison for life first offense, no second chances to screw up another poor childs life. To hell with them. Don't even lump me in with that trash. They will recieve their judgment at the foot of the Lord and it will be appropriate.

Dude! Lighten up a bit. Jesus said in order to be His Disciple - you have to "pick up your own Cross" and follow Him. This is Lent, my friend. Join your "sufferings" (if that's what you think they are) to His Passion.
And never forget: Jesus warned you: They hate you because they first hated Him.

Because Protestants rule the media and Catholics aren't the squeaky wheels that other "minority religion" groups are. Catholics are seen as not being "true Christians" by many Protestants. Not all Protestants are bad, but the ones that go door-to-door will say that you aren't "saved" if you're Catholic. I used to go to a non-denominational church and there were always people praying for the poor, misguided Catholics. I was raised Catholic but took a break from the Church for a few years and went to a non-denominational church that brainwashed the youth group that dating was the same as sex and that you could only marry a Christian.
Many Protestants see Communion as a symbol and there are some psychos out there that say that "Mother Teresa calls Jesus a piece of bread!" when talking about what's in the KJV Bible of the last supper. Jesus didn't say that it was representative of anything, because it was quite clear when he was telling a parable, but rather "do this in memory of me."
There are even "Christians" saying that Mary wasn't a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. Again, the KJV says that she was and that was the prophecy in the Bible. I think that the zealots like to be in everyone's face, but put a bad image of Christianity. Not every Baptist is a jerk who'll push their faith on you. Faith should be shared out of love, not as a requirement of "salvation" ... "Have I not love and I am but a clanging gong or a resounding symbol." 1 Corinthians 13 says... so you're going to hurt the ears of those you're trying to help! You aren't planting seeds of faith in people, you're throwing salt on the fields!
Anyhow... I know I'm going to have people contact me about how something I said isn't in the Bible. I've tried talking to some of these people, but you can't have a conversation with someone who's closed-minded. (Again, not all Christians are and not all who disagree... but it only takes a few bad apples.)

I think Catholics are the target of so much "crap" (for lack of a more polite term) because we are one of the more conservative, counter-cultural religions in practice today. Out beliefs don't change with every new discovery or development. And even when it flies in the face of "common sense," some of our teachings are held on to for deep theological reasons.
Now, the Catholic Church ain't perfect, not by a long shot. If you look at the history of the papcy, the crusades, the inquisition, etc, you will find a LOT of sin and corruption. But you will also find a lot of basically good people trying to live lifes that are pleasing to God. Unfortunately, history doesn't always remember the good stuff.

I see more hate crimes tward Christians than roman catholic.
But My mother is roman catholic, my boyfriends family is,
The religion has touched my life a lot. And I don't discriminate.
Live and let live, but if it's any consolation, EVERYONE is the butt end of some joke or another.
You wanna hear a really funny irish joke.
This man was stumbling out of a bar after closing with a bottle of wisky in his back poket, He lost balance and fell flat on his @ss, and when he got up, he felt a warm liquid trickle down his leg. The man said to himselg, " god please let that be blood"
But the really funny thing is, American's are more of alcoholics that ireland is.
just look for humor in the world, cause when your laughing, your too bussy to hate.

I have to agree with the general sentiment of your comment. I think, as in all discrimination, or judgement of religions, it often comes from people who don't have any personal experience with it, and base their comments on what they hear on tv, etc... for example the person who just responded above me regarding Catholics supporting pedophilia... that's total bullsh**, and clearly an ignorant comment based on a few facts. I agree that "the church", as an institution has made a lot of mistakes throughout history (I'm originally from Mexico where the Spanish Inquisition killed millions in the 1400 and 1500's), but the spirit of the religion does not condoe these acts. To be hoenst, I get really pissed off when I see on tv that comedians, pundits, etc. make derogatory comments about catholics, and nobody complains!! it's like we're just supposed to take it. but say something bad about- hmmm, let's say the jews, and out come the big guns asking for apologies, retractions, etc!!! i don't support the stereotyping of any religion, but i do see that there's a huge difference in the leniency towards comments directed at Catholics.

I am also Catholic. I asked a priest about that once. He told me that if we were not so treated that he would be concerned that we are not in the True Church. Remember what happened to Jesus and all of the martyrs of the Early Church? At least we are lucky enough to live in the USA where we have the same rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion as those who hate us. I also don't like some of the things said about us but God can handle it. Peace be with you.

it is not that Catholics worship Mary, yet they provide the impact and visual charm that they worship Mary. whilst someone sees the Pope kneel down on stay television in the previous a statue of Mary and spend time in prayer, it rather is an fairly reliable impact that leads me to have faith that he's, certainly, worshiping Mary. i understand and understand that Catholics do _not_ worship Mary, however the visual charm that they do is annoying to beat. and it is the reason it is amazingly ordinary to make a assertion that Roman Catholics worship Mary. If the Catholics have been clever, they does no longer show their faith is one among these deceptive way (and it is deceiving, in any different case, why might I make the assertion that it particular feels like worship to me?). TDs expected from the Catholics extra: it is not correct what you asked for (and no, i do no longer understand of everywhere interior the Catechism the place it says that Catholics are to worship Mary). i'm nonetheless left with that impact from assertion.

Fellow Italian Catholic, here.
I second that emotion. At least Italians aren't discriminated against like they were 40 years ago.
Actually, I take that back. if we were, we could have a cut in the Affirmative Action programs and Italian-American scholarships. It's good to be a minority.
Remember, us Catholics are SUCH bad people because we teach peace and love. Shame on us.

you shouldnt. being a catholic includes standing up for what you believe in. remember, that in the bible Jesus says 'if you are ashamed of me, then I shall be ashamed of you before my Heavenly Father.' speak out against these things. this world is slowly being corrupted with evil, but we must not let it. if we do, we are just as bad.
