maybe you could try clicking technique and shape a new behavior for your pup and drinking water. I have used this technique on my shepard who was a outofcontrol maniac with balls. for ex, couldn't resist snatching the ball out of my hand (painful). since he is very fast, the key was to click right before he'd grab the ball and then praise him. the first clicks happened on "happy accidents". He hesistated a second or two. the sound of the clicker and my reaction surprised him and i was able to increase the time between my grabbing the ball and him waiting. maybe, you could do something like that with your pup as he is about to splash, click and praise with something he loves more than water splashing. same scenario with bowl digging. hope this can help.

Does your puppy still have water in it's bowl when he does this, if so then he might just be trying to cool his feet off or he is showing some of his breed's habits. Since the German Shepard started out as a wild dog, it is closely related to the wolf. Wolves of course digs through ice and snow in the winter to get to fresh water.

Give him a water bottle instead of a bowl. It cuts down on the feet in the bowl and the splashing. My friend is a breeder and that is what she did when one of the pups started doing that. It worked for her!

That is soooo puppy!

Try a bowl that gets suction cupped down.

Or give him water outside and let him go crazy. You did say long walk! Keep the bowl near the hose.

you cant, hes a big dog and prob needs a bigger bowl and more water throughout the day as he may not be having enough water as he seems rather excited to see the bowl after a walk.

try giving him more water throughout the day and put newspaper under the bowl or something for the spiliage

It's hard. I'm not sure if you can, but put some kind of towel/mat underneath him when he drinks. Is he drinking like that just after a long walk?

You can buy water dishes that are more like a bucket with higher sides than regular bowl...

hes a puppy and hes just playing-hes discovering new thing. I would just make sure to let him drink outside before you bring him back into the house.

I have heard a number of theories as to why dogs do this. My vet told me they do it to cool themselves off, but I swear my lab mix did it because he wanted to swim. Stopping the behavior is the same as stopping any unwanted behavior--shout "No!" and then reward him immediately if he stops. And the good news--my dog (now 3) doesn't do it anymore.
