Yes; a typical laptop uses ~50 watts of power and a high end one might use ~120, depending on the size of the screen, etc. Monitors and desktops both draw about 80 watts (LCDs are better, 35 watts). As appliances go, this is fairly low-end - about as much as a single light-bulb - but it's still substantial, especially since computers are often on all the time. Energy Star compliant computers might use less power - on average considerably (70%) less.

you bet. Wired magazine had a recent article about the servers used by google. They have so many running that their power consumption is about the same as the entire city of Las Vegas. And they are growing. Google is definitely interested therefore in getting cheaper energy, hopefully renewable, maybe solar or wind, etc.

We had a new hire in 1994. We actually worked out that if he just stayed after work each night and turned off all our desktop computers that the energy saved over the course of the year would match his salary.

Of course that was/is not practical in all situations as there could be compiling jobs running or people accessing their desktop machines remotely and they would not appreciate being shut down.

have confidence it or no longer, the Vista desktops will use tons extra potential than an XP pc will using fact, to get the Aero/Vista pix, you like a great, potential sucking GPU (pix chip) to run it. So if this is potential intake you're worried approximately, stick to what you have (and congratulations for being so worried with reference to the ambience). Now with reference to the noise. there are purely some issues in the pc that would make noise: the followers and the difficultcontinual. enable's wish the difficultcontinual isn't so noisy which you had to write down and ***** approximately it. if it is so, you likely be attentive to via now that it become waiting to fail. So, enable's assume this is followers. you are able to % out which fan comfortably. Take the hide off the pc and initiate it up. With the hide off you ought to have the skill to isolate which fan is the difficulty. in case you're no longer one hundred% optimistic, heavily positioned a pencil eraser on the flat section (with the label) of the fan in the midst of the blades (no longer into the blades themselves) to end or sluggish the fan. those followers spin at a intense fee, yet they have little or no torque, so which you will easily end them with an eraser. as quickly as you % out which one is the difficulty, you are able to replace it. If this is the only on the CPU, do it as quickly as you are able to using fact the CPU desires to be cooled or it gets broken. in case you're in there, if there is a good number of dirt, blow it out with an electric powered air pump (like one for a mattress or to explode automobile tires). do no longer use a vacuum! this would suck off jumpers from the motherboard which will make the pc no longer function in any respect. good success.

Slightly more than a large television for most desktop computers with a CRT monitor, and significantly less for laptops. They are still a fairly insignificant part of your electric bill....!
