There are a lot of online forums for 4-wheeling and offroading. Get an idea of what you want or you may already have a brand loyalty, and then check out the forums for those trucks. Jeep, Bronco, Blazer, Power Wagon... they all have forums dedicated to them, and they usually all have a classified section as well

Or you could just take a good weekend drive out to the country. Sometimes you can get a great deal If you see an old truck that's been put out to pasture, just stop and ask about it... you might get lucky.

Jeeps are great, but most guys swap the axle's and motors with chevy stuff so you might as well just start with a K-5 or pick-up and save yourself the hassel.

Classic Bronco's.... Pre-77 are great rigs, but hard to find in good condition. The 78-79 Bronco's are the best of the line IMO, they had the solid axle Dana 44 in the front from the factory. Everything from 80 up was a TTB Dana 44, and they're just not as rugged as the solid axle rigs are, most serious off road guys with late model Bronco's and F-150 swap out the TTB with a solid axle from the Pre-79 Ford's.

I like the old Toyota Landcruisers too... they're about as tough a 4x4 as you could ask for.

Buy a 4x4 where they wouldn't use it for plowing. I live in NY and the majority of 4x4's ars so abused that they cost a ton of cash to fix them from plowing. Also, when you plow, it tends to twist the frames of the trucks. That is what happens when you slam into a frozen pile of snow at 20 miles an hour. Time is money!

ebay for an army truck. Such as the k-5 blazer. They have the 6.5l turbo diesel with 4wheel drive and some have only 25,000 miles. Some are under $3000.
