Get his wings clipped. It doesn't hurt the bird, and it actually helps keep him safe. Take the cage to a vet or most pet stores will do it for free!

Then you should sit near the cage every day, cooing and making noises. Make the same soft noises as you feed him daily. Slowly introduce your hand, and he will get more comfy over time.

Good luck!

Your Parakeet will be eager to accept you as friend. Start by talking to it in a soothing voice. Parakeets enjoy attention and affection, and they quickly sense friendship. With patience and persistence it can be taught to sit on your finger or shoulder, and even say a few words and do some tricks.

One effective method to get your Parakeet adjusted to your home is to trim its wings. When you buy your Parakeet from Elmer's we will clip its wings at no charge upon request. Having it's wings trimmed is painless to the bird. It will be unable to fly for a month or two until the wings grow back fully. With its wings clipped you can open the door on the cage and allow the bird to climb around the outside of its cage. Once the bird learns that it can not fly it will stay near the cage, and it will be much easier to tame and train it.

Training periods should consist of several short periods each day. (About 10 minutes each.) Within a very short time you should be able to walk around the house with your Parakeet on your finger.

Parakeets are very bright birds and can become very entertaining pets. To enjoy your bird the most we suggest you purchase a book on Parakeet care and follow their training instructions. Hope these sites help.

I have a Parakeet and a Cockatiel.
I had no problem training my Cockatiel to sit on my finger and he even gives me kisses. I take him to work with me everyday. My Parakeet who is actually a small male Budgie, will not stay on my finger. I cant seem to train him to do anything. I got my Budgie from a Pet Store. I got my Cockatiel from a breeder. I think that is the difference. Although I love both of my birds, I cant really take the Budgie anywhere, I am afraid he will get lost. I lost him in the house twice. He hides from me. Both birds wings are clipped. I have had the Budgie for 1 month longer then the Cockatiel.
Hand raised birds have more human conttact. They are more social.

You have to train your bird to accept that your hand will not hurt him. Right now he is afraid of your hand. This is the way I trained my parakeet:
For the first few days, hold your hand outside of the cage where he can see it for about 5 min. at a time, at least 3 times a day. Talk to your parakeet in a soothing, low voice.

For a few days after that, hold your hand in a non-threatening position inside the cage for about 5 min. at a time, at least 3 times a day. Keep your hand VERY still during this time! While your hand is in the cage, speak soothingly to your bird, saying his name.

After the bird gets used to your hand, he will move around like normal and "ignore" your hand. At this point, try feeding him a treat from your hand. Parakeets love millet spray, so try that.

After he eats from your hand, you can now start to finger train him. Hold your finger out like a perch and approach him VERY slowly. Speak very soothingly the entire time. Push your finger up against his belly a bit. This will cause your bird to lose balance and step onto your finger. Once your bird stays on your finger, you can slowly start trying to take him out of his cage.

Good luck!
