I take each letter and convert it to it's position in the alphabet, then I add 666 to it and multiply it by the percentage of your salary the Mormons require you to tithe, then I add in the number of times the average prayer fails in a year. Finally, I ignore the resulting number and just pull something out of my ***.

Interesting question. I recall when I was younger and in the Assembly of God church there would be someone who jumps up and starts 'speaking in tongues' and then it always seemed the same guy would jump up and 'interpret'. Same guy, year after year. I believe this man truly believes/d that he had a gift.
However this gift of speaking in tongues as many previous posters have stated is from the Holy Spirit, and why would there be a need to have an intermediary--the person speaking gobbley ****? Why didn't just this man jump up and start talking?
Nonetheless, the speaking in tongues is supposed to be of another lanuage that is understood, and the speaker of these tongues not his native tongue to listeners of a different language....a way to deposit the faith by word of mouth. This gift is clearly shown in Acts and the subsequent teachers (Bishops and priests) going out and doing just what Christ commanded "Go forth and preach the Word of God".

Tongues is a language that is spoken by God through believers. In the old testament, God was not impressed by the way that humans were acting. So He made it where everyone spoke a different language so they couldn't understand each other. Tongues works in that way too. It is used a lot for prayer so Satan can't understand it to work against it. Tongues is a very special language that certain people have the gift to speak or translate.

Speaking a "tongue" just means to miraculously speak a legitimate foreign language (i.e. italian, latin, hebrew), without having learned it.
I'm guessing you've read 1 Corinthians 14:23 -
"So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?"
To my knowledge, Pentecostal churches speak in "tongues" although they do not often have true translators, because the "tongues" are in fact gibberish. So when new people come to visit, they think, "These guys are out of their minds!"
Hope this helps

I do not know, I have never seen it take place.
I have seen people pray in tongues before and some I have fully believed and some I seriously doubted.
In none of those instances have there been a translator.
Apparently what is supposed to happen is that someone else is moved by the Holy Spirit and they say in the common language what it is the other person is saying in the mysterious language.

I didn't know there was one. But maybe there is. I remember going to church when I was younger, and step mom would all of a sudden start feeling the "holy ghost" and start speaking in tongues. It was a sight to see.
It was almost like she was being possessed.

speaking in tongues are just another lie and deception of religion!
and the worse part in there are some really stupid people who believe in the lies and deception!
Here's the Solution:
""religion is Spiritual fraud"; "religion is the Worse invention of humanity" - Jesus Christ
Create a private, personal, direct, divine Relationship with Our Creator and save your Soul from religion.
Only with Our Creator's Love and Peace will we be Truly Free!
Without God, there is No Love; Without religion, there are No Wars!
Once you Create the Relationship, all you'll be "speaking" is Peace, Love and Global Harmony!

It is a specific gift given to some by the Holy Spirit. I know of a case where someone was given to interpret the tongue but was too shy...so a third person person was given to interpret it instead. (Later that person said that the Lord told them to speak in place of the interpreter.)

My sister is going to be a translator for those who are hearing impaired... but then again, that kind of communication doesn't involve the tongue at all, does it?

Only the Holy Spirit can give an interpretation of tongues. He loans the ability to speak in tongues to someone and then he also loans the ability to interpret tongues to someone. The ability is His to give on both counts; it is always for the building up of believers.
