Depends on how well the first two get along. Sometimes an older cat doesn't want a new young one around. But if you already have a young cat (by "young" I mean "kitten") you need to get a second cat to keep it out of trouble.
I have more than 3 cats and they ALL want to play, snuggle and get brushed by their caregiver (me).
When they are VERY young, three will get along great and will grow up loving each other (provided they are not all males).
Good luck.

"Even with one cat your home will stink" Thomas S
Not true, If you keep your home clean and take car of the litter box, no one will even know you have a cat unless they see it or see hair some where... I have a cat and a dog and usually no one knows there is a cat around.. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW CLEAN OF A PERSON U R.... 3 would be fine.. 2 would be fine.. All cats have there own personalities like humans.... If you want all the attention I would just get 1, but then you might be stuck getting a finicky one that doesn't want anything to do with you. In that case I would get 2 or more, that way you are guaranteed that one is more attached to you than the other....Good Luck

I have recently got my 4th cat. When I had only 3, 2 would stick together and the 3rd would stick with me. It hasn't really changed now that I got my 4th because he is a baby and my other 3 are older. Anyway, 3 cats are better than 2.

There really isn't that much difference.
Now, I had an old cat. And I adopted a pair of kittens whose momma couldn't feed them. The old cat didn't like the little intruders at all, but the kittens didn't mind: They could play with eachother.
It really depends on the kitties you're talking about.

I'd like to start by telling the people who complain about stinky houses and crazy old cat ladies: go boink yerselves.
I have seven cats, all indoor-ourdoor (I live on acreage in the country.) So three cats sounds like a small number to me! I'd like to add that neither I nor my husband (who adores our cats) are crazy. We just happen to love animals. Our house smells wonderful because we take proper CARE of our cats and litter boxes.
If you have the room, go right ahead and adopt that third kitty. Until stupid human beings get a clue about spaying and neutering, there will always be pets in need of a loving home like yours.

I have three, thats enough for me personally to take care of, yes the litter box needs checked/scooped daily.. Other then that they arent to much work. My three cats have completely different personalities and we all get along fine. As for the smell? I've never noticed a smell in our place.. possibly because the cats always use their litter boxes and the boxes are upkept daily..

It depends mostly on the cats' personality. We started with a dog, than added two kittens to the mix, about two years ago, they all got along & still wanted attention from us. This past oct. we added a male kitten, the cats hated him when we first got him, but him & the dog got along, & they play all the time. Now the male cat gets along with the kitten, but the female cat can tolerate him but doesn't like him. The newer kitten mostly likes to be around the other animals than us.

I think 2 is better. I have two kittens right now. They are inseparable. If the older one jumps up on me and falls asleep so does the younger one. He wants to do everything his big brother is doing. The younger one doesn't have a favorite person he goes to. He will go by anyone that is willing to give him attention. My older one has to be by me all the time when he's tired. He won't go by my fiancee and fall asleep.

Even with one cat your home will stink. No cats is the best answer. I got 7 of them and they all live outside even if it is 30 below. If they don't like it here with me they can always move on and find a nieghbor to live with. the only thing they have been good for is keeping the birds out of the garage. although they knock every off the shelves chasing them. I can guarentee you don't want a cat in the house.

Ask yourself how often do you want to clean the litter box? The more cats the more often you have to clean the litter box.
The more cats you have the more cat food you'll go through.
As for me having no cats is the best--I'm allergic.
