Well they are your ma' n dad so you can't just blow them off, but it is your birthday, I think if you took a few days to yourself to celebrate, that you would greatly enjoy it and they would survive. Have fun, if you do go, drive safe! ^_~ *winks*

You're parents are apparently depending on you right now. If you father just got out of the hospital, what if there was an emergency with him? Even if an ambulance could come get him, they probably wouldn't let your mother ride along.
If you are questioning whether or not you should run off and shirk your temporary responsibility (I'm assuming, hopefully, that your father's inability to drive is only a temporary condition), I think you really know the answer. You have the rest of your life to get drunk and act a fool. Your parents need you right now. Waiting a month or two and acting responsibly about your obligation, voluntary or not, should certainly provide some comfort to your parents that they have raised a responsible child... and should mean a lot to them even if you do go get wasted later.

If you feel you're parents need you, go with it. You may only be 21 once but you only get 1 set of parents and they are perishable. There will be other parties and you can have fun without getting smashed. I'm all for a good party but I think its important not to create regrets. Have your party when dad is feeling better. You'll be in a better mood, more relaxed and have a better time. As for your friend, it's called peer pressure and the leading cause of regret.

You need to go. I've read a ton about how stressed caregivers can be, and you do need a little time for yourself. It doesn't matter if you're partying or hiking or just looking at nature. You need YOU time.
Enlist family friends, neighbors, and relatives to take over your duties while you're gone. If you belong to a church you could enlist the pastor's help in finding people to cover for you.
God bless you for caring so much.

I say go.
But before you do contact some friends and ask them if they would be willing to "look after" your parents for the weekend. Tell them all they would really need to do is give them rides to certain places maybe twice. I did this for my friend a couple of times giving her parents rides to work when she had classes.

Do what your heart tells you. You'll be 21 for a year, so if you'd rather hold off until you're dad is doing better, you can still go without feeling guilty. Can your friend fly to your town instead?

Do they have friends or relatives around? If not, then you need to find help for your parents before flying to FL. That's called responsibility. Good luck and Happy Birthday :)

Um, they brought you into this world, wiped both ends for far longer than they liked, and now you want to desert them as your old man hopes to staggers out of a hospital. Honey, is
your NC friend treating her parents as disrespectfully, or is it
just you?
