You can buy dewormer over the counter for about $5. I guess it would depend on the severity of the worms, but I have had my dogs dewormed and both of them together didn't cost that much..even with the vet visit.

Deworming at a vet's office can end up being costly depending on where you go. However, there are lots of over the counter dewormer medications. They're sold everywhere from Walmart & Grocery stores to PetsMart and PetCo. They do cost as little as $5.
Also, I've recently spoken to a vet, and they said that the only times deworming is necessary is if they've been diagnosed with worms or if they've been exposed to worms. If the lady selling the cat is wanting to deworm the cat just to deworm it, then it isn't worth it.

If it was just the regular dewormer than no, it shouldn't cost that much.
However, if the cat had a really bad worm infestation, she may have needed additional meds, fluids, maybe an overnight stayat the vets... that can add up quickly.
It's also possible that the amount includes other vet costs, such as a full set of vaccinations.
If you're not sure, why not just ask to see the vet bill?

Tell her to give you a copy of the paperwork from the vet after she has taken the cat to the vet for a complete checkup and deworming, provided the cat need to be dewormed. Usually, deworming takes two treatments. We need to clean fecal samples to be considered parasite free. She may be charging you for the vet visit, the vaccinations, the deworming....find out what the $150 will cover. If it doesn't cover initial vaccinations and the deworming and exam, then I'd say you're getting stiffed.

For my dogs I have purchased both dewormer and 8-1 vaccinations at our tractor supply store and have given it to them myself. My breeder turned me on to this info.I have seen dewormer at these stores and Meijers and some of the other stores that sell pet things not counting the pet stores them selves.Dewormer is easy to give you just put it in a sryinge or eye dropper and squeeze it in their mouth. The vaccinations come with a syringe and needle that you can also do your self if it doesnt scare you to stick something. After paying the large vet bill for the exact same thing I can buy at the tractor store for 5.98 I got over being afraid.I gave all my puppies their shots and dewormings.Mostly what you are paying for at the vet is the exam fee.If you are afraid to do it yourself and you have a petsmart in your area they have well visit days that you come in between certain hours and the vet fee is waived they only charge for the vaccination that you need.
The dewormer that is out there may not cover all worms ,if this cat has alot then you may have to get it tested to see what variety of worm it has that is what will cost you ,not the dewormer.Good luck

It's possible, especially if the vet has to keep the cat for a couple of days. A mall in our town recently had what they called a "cat dewormathon" where people could drop their cats off for deworming and pick them up in 4 hours, and the cost was only $25.

No way. A visit to the vet for worming should cost about $15.
There are other factors involved though. Is it a purebred cat of some type? Is it spayed/neutered and tested? (Those costs can easily be over the price she is asking.)
It's up to you to determine if you want to pay this much. Consider these factors. If you like the cat and she's had all the vet work done, it's a reasonable price.

Around here the test for worms runs $18-$30. The worming medication runs about $12 for one type of worm and $8 for the other. Unless you live in Hollywood it shouldn't run you $150.
Avoid the over the counter products. Some of this stuff is very toxic. It's best to find out if the cat has worms first, then get the exact medicine you need.

After taking in two homeless kittens to foster I ended up having to have them dewormed along with my permanent two cats and two dogs that were living with me at the time (not fostering them so much as long-term dog-sitting).
Combined total for deworming of 4 cats and 2 dogs, including tests on stool samples from all of them....about $80
If you're concerned she's over-charging you, ask to see the vet bill.
