First, you have to believe that there is an emporer at all. Then, you have to believe that he is good and wise, yet vindictive, and all-powerful, and will decide your eternal fate on his own mysterious terms.

Does this sort of character appeal to some need for guilt and self-loathing?

first, you have to understand that we are the ones with no clothes, not god.

second, you have to read the bible and begin to understand his character - one of great love and yet great holiness.

and finally, you have to realize that, yes, our eternal fates are decided by God but He has made the way very very clear and it is only our rebellion and pride that stand in the way of our salvation.

and doubly finally, we are the ones who are guilty and we truly deserve eternal damnation. But God, who so loves the world, sent his only begotten Son....
