Being a Geologist, I would say that Noah's flood is so unbelievable that only an idiot would believe it. However, don't you think that God has the ability to take away all proof of Him so that He lets the humans decide if He is real or not. God wants us to believe without seeing. Can you? It is very difficult, but I do.
Also, there was no measurement of time in Noah's day. How could he live to be over 900 years old when they never established years? At what state was the earth in Noah's time? Could it have been Pangea, where all the continents were linked together? Possibly... There may not have been as many animals then either, perhaps a small group of animals evolved into others, who knows?? Even though I don't see any proof of something doesn't mean it is not real. God has the power to do anything so these stories may or may not have happened, but it is up to you to form your own opinion. How could Jesus have walked on water? It seems far fetched, but I believe he did. Just because we never seen any of God's miracles, doesn't make them untrue. We have proof of the dinosaurs, but if we didn't, would you believe they ever existed?

Obviously you have not done your research.
1. Numerous expeditions have been done in search of Noah's ark; many have come back with pieces of wood, etc. that would date from the proposed time period. None of these expeditions have left the researchers "disbelieving"; rather these expeditions have been very encouraging to Bible believers. Just do an Internet search for "Noah's ark exploration" and you will quickly find some photos of such research.
2. There are at least 2 specific examples I know of where a man, in fairly recent history, has been found alive inside a whale. Do an Internet search and you should quickly find the examples to which I refer.
3. What's so weird about wandering in the desert for 40 years? Have you ever heard of bedouins...
4. Traces of the Tower of Babel and the garden of Eden are not able to be found...why? Because a worldwide flood, Noah's flood, erased all traces of this earlier existence.
If these stories don't make sense to you, I'm sorry. The reason they don't, ultimately, is that you must not believe in an all-powerful God. All of these stories are very possible--the only prevention from believing some of them is you have to believe in the existence of a God Who can do as He pleases. By very definition, God can do anything He wants. If He wants to send a worldwide flood, obviously He could. If He wanted a whale to swallow a man, surely He could bring it to pass.

Did you take the time to read the stories you are speaking of and questioning? Or are you just looking for an argument.
It is so easy to discredit something you do not understand and so very difficult to believe in what you have no knowledge.
As for Noah and the ark, how long did it take for him and his sons to build it? If you know the answer, it shouldn't be too hard for even you to reason or rationalize how all the animals got to the boat.
Jonah and the big fish, well, I have actually met people from that region of the world and they inform me that they still fast and praise God for His mercy in not destroying Their city.
Shall I continue or am I still not a rational adult yet?

"The only other options other than some belief in divinity is nihilism, and that is just too depressing."
ianrhubb
That is just flat out untrue. I don't believe in any kind of God but I'm far from a nihilist. I care very much about the world, my family and friends. Life may not be eternal or have a set purpose but I still value it and feel really lucky to be here, more so than friends of mine who do believe in God.
As for the original question asked by bc_munke, every rational adult has a capacity to believe irrational things. Some people just have bigger blind spots than others.

Ever hear of Aesop's Fables? Same principle applies. A cracking good story without historicity or reality used to make a point that IS true.
In this case, the point being, there is only one God and He is all-powerful and He created everything and everyone.
Remember, these tales were originally intended to alert an illiterate, largely ignorant and superstitious bunch of nomadic herdsmen to the existence of a different concept of life and reality than they had previously known.

The bible is based on believing the IMPOSSIBLE!!
Its foundation points are that a virgin gave birth to a child and that a man was raised from the dead
you are not sopposed to find rational or facts behind it. i think that all of you are MISSING THE POINT. Faith and Religion is about believing that miracles can happen. the only other options other than some belief in divinity is nihilism, and that is just too depressing.

You are correct to mind which wants everything to "make sense" on human terms it is a stretch to imagine how this could take place.
I do not pretend to fully comprehend how this was accomplished but being a reasonable person, I believe these to be true.
Edit: And yes, these accomplishments are not "humanly" possible, but what is impossible for man is entirely possible for God. He is able to do so much more than we can understand, and further I believe the Bible gives us a limited view of the scope of who God really is.

I would consider myself to be a rational, intelligent adult that also has deep faith in God and the Bible. I don't understand why many think that the two have to be mutually exclusive: rationality and religion. To be a true Christian requires in depth study, meditation, analysis and research. Anyone can say they believe in God, but true understanding requires much effort.
Just as there are many well informed and intelligent athiests, why can't you recognize the well informed and intelligent thiests?

No. Have you ever tried to read Genesis? I'm sorry, but I refuse to believe that there was a time when people lived for 700 years. Building a life around the bible is just really REALLY wishful thinking.
