Isn't it better to just be honest and go tell your priest you are messing up? Doesn't honesty make it easier to ask for help?

this was asked because of protestant questions about confession. I like being allowed to be honest about my imperfections and i like being able to openly ask for help and advice to improve myself. It sseems logical to me that the opposite of openess would be hiding

Right up front on my face. I am not Catholic so I do not have a priest, but I do talk to my friend who is a pastor and to my group online. Honesty is best no matter what you believe and even if you do not.

DON'T PANIC

Well I'm not a Catholic, I therefore don't believe in confessing my sins to any man. I am a sinner, I have never tried to hide the fact that I am a sinner, But bless God I have a living God I can go to and ask for forgiveness when I mess up. Do you? Are you honest with yourself and your own sins? Before you point the finger at everyone else take a good look at your own life. I can guarantee you its less than perfect.

If you can tell me where it is written that I can only be forgiven by telling a priest my sin's I may consider it.
A priest by no means is able to forgive you of your sins, he just gives you accountability. I am honest with the Father concerning my sins. I know I am a sinner, I ask for help working on the sins I am aware of and those I am not aware of.
To know I am messing up I look to God's true inspired Word, not a man wearing a little white collar.

Our National Hero was killed because of the confession to a Roman Catholic Priest by a man ( a member of our revolutionary team that struggles for the Land's freedom) that a a "Kilusan" is existing. Also the man was killed.

Confession was suggested by Paul and it is good. But place it in a good and trust worthy person, a person who TRULY loves you and will understand you. So that if He sees you doing it again, He has the responsibility to warn you, because your the only human who knows.

That's the purpose of confession. We don't hide are sinfulness. Only we protect ourself from people who will take advantage of religious belief for their political and other self-interest.

protestant is ver general. I use the protestant Bible (66 books) so i guess that would make me protestant. But I don't hide my sin usually. and my priest doesn't forgive my sins. God does. I can talk to Him all I want by myself (the Bible calls us Kings and Priests, a Royal Priesthood and a Holy Nation".

I'm generally honest though. If I lied, I'll tell you I lied once I'm convicted, which is usually a fraction of a second after. it sounds wierd, but atleast it keeps me trustworthy...

They don't hide their sinfulness, but they a lot of time are unaware of it just as we Catholics are. And to the guy that made the comment about the Priest and altar boys, Do not judge an entire religion on a few screwed up Priest I know a lot of Protestant preachers who have done the same thing, they are just kept quite about it. and the Priest that do that are defrocked from their position. so keep your mouth shut when asked a question that you don't know the answer to, and don't judge. Remember Judge not lest ye be judged.

Why do you persist in thinking of people as sinners?

Have you ever thought about the idea of sin from a basis of logic?

The first thing that someone should be considering is whether the idea of sin is actually real.

If God is supposed to be perfect how could She have made anything or anyone that wasn't perfect.
Think about it. The idea of sin assumes certain things about God that seem highly unlikely.

First it assumes a God who is too incompetent to organize a simple educational field excursion and figure out a way to get all of the students home safely.

How likely is this that God would not be smart enough to come up with a plan for our salvation that is going to work 100 percent of the time?

It also assumes that God must have created us imperfect if we are sinners.

One might assume that God would be able to create someone perfect each and every time if he chose to. Assuming God is capable of this, then it follows logically that we must be perfect creations if we are actually creations of this perfect God.

Unless of course you are saying that God chose to create us imperfect.

If God created us imperfect then anything that may go wrong is Gods fault, not ours. This seems a bit illogical at best so I think that we need to assume that What God creates would have to be perfect.

If this is the case and Gods creations are perfect, then nothing that we can do could change what God created perfect and make it imperfect unless we think that we are more powerful than God is.

How likely is it that we the creation could be more powerful than the creator. I personally find this idea somewhat amusing, and a bit absurd.

Religion tells us that God is perfect. If this is true then it could hardly be logically for Gods creations to be considered to be anything less than perfect.

If this is the case and we are perfect creations of a perfect God then Nothing that we can ever do could possibly change this perfection that God willed, unless we were so powerful that our choices could override and change the will of God.

How likely is that????

Think about it.

I don't think they are. I think they are sinning right up front with u and everyone else... food for thought... is going into a dark closet and telling someone in confidence that u have sinned being open or honest about it?
Are u going to tell yr priest this week that u have judged lest u be judged?
God knows... no one else NEEDS to.

Protestants don't HAVE priests. And Catholics who go to confession might still "hide their sinfulness" from everyone BUT the priest. And generalizations such as you're making are not helpful, really, to anyone.

Actually I did go to my priest.
I did confess I was a sinner.
He forgave me.

I can give you his name.
Heb 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession.

Do you see His Name?
Yes, Jesus is His Name.
The Name that is above every name that is Named.
Eph 1:21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.

OLAY!
