Most Americans drink too little water.
Make sure you're drinking x mL of water where x is your weight divided by 2 (ie: 150 lb woman should drink 75 mL water)
Make sure you're taking calcium CITRATE and magnesium CITRATE (make sure it's citrate, and not another type)
This is generally the most helpful thing. Good luck.
Chiropractic is also good with dysmenorrhea. You should talk to your local doctor of chiropractic and see if they can help.

I have really bad cramps during my period and even though i dont feel like it at first i exercise. painkillers dont work for the kind of cramps i have so i have to do this and believe me it really does work. you can play basketball or jog for about 20 minutes and it will help a lot. for some people heating pads work wonders. also i've heard that lavender can help ease cramps but i dont really know the details so you'd have to research that one a little bit. hope this helps!

Calcium supplements. Take 500 mg every hour that you have cramps. Also place 1 tablespoon of organic blackstrap molasses in a glass of warm water, and drink. Cramps can go away within 15 minutes.

I can sympathsize.
Take a look at some herbal teas: There are a few that are good for this sort of thing. I've successfully used Tension Tamer with an extra dash of ginger and a spoon of honey.
Feel better!

your local drugstore probably has "magic bags" or their own knock-off - bags of beans that you can put in the microwave, and they retain heat - they help if you can just sit there curled up around one of them on your belly.
another option, probably also in the drugstore, is adhesive patches that warm up when they're on your skin - I've used those when I have to be out and active while cramping. the ones I've used are about 4" by 6", and smell like peppermint! which is also soothing!

Hot water bottles, heating pads, hot baths, hot showers, hot chamomile tea or hot herbal mint tea.
Avoid all caffiene, chocolate, milk and other dairy products, and sugar starting several days before your period is due.
