In the UK it is legal to marry your first cousin.
This is thanks to Henry VIII who changed the law to marry his cousin!
Cousins are advised to consult thier GPs to ensure that there are no factors in the family's health records that would make the decision to have children inadvisable on medical grounds.

Depending on where you live, it may be legal. However, some religious denominations frown upon it and you may find it difficult to get a clergyman/woman to perform a wedding. Doctors won't encourage you to have children because the risk of hereditary illnesses (physical as well as mental) is obviously increased because of your common gene pool. The claims that children born to first cousins will be backward or suffer from mental disabilities or be physically deformed is unhelpful scare-mongering. An unrelated couple could just as likely find a previously undetected or unknown hereditary illness showing up in their children because these may be passed on by a carrier, such as haemophilia, or because the disease affects males only or females only.

I am absolutly shocked at the level of misinformation people are trying to tell you. They are telling you what they THINK it should be and NOT what the laws really are.
YES, first cousin's marrying is completely legal. 35 US states allow for first cousin marriages in some form or another. ALL states allow for 2nd cousin marriages.
Lets get some quick facts out here:
"All states allow the marriage of second cousins" (USA)
"No European country prohibits marriage between first cousins. It is also legal throughout Canada and Mexico to marry your cousin. The U.S. is the only western country with cousin marriage restrictions."
"Children of non-related couples have a 2-3% risk of birth defects, as opposed to first cousins having a 4-6% risk. "
"Current studies indicate that cousin couples have a lower ratio of miscarriages."
"God commanded many cousins to marry, including Zelophehad's 5 daughters, Eleazar's daughters, Jacob (who married both Rachel and Leah, first cousins), and Isaac and Rebekkah (first cousins once removed)"
"Leviticus 18 lists all forbidden sexual relationships. Cousin relationships are not included."
"We are all cousins. No two people are more distantly related than 50th cousins."

It is legal but not encouraged as it has greater chances of the offspring being genetically affected with medical problems.

Not a particularly good idea but it is perfectly legal in some states. Consider sterilizing each partner before consumating the marriage. Generally, your family tree should fork.

Yes. My uncle married his cousin. However their child was a little backward - don't know if this was something to do with it. But they were happy, even though there was a lot family gossip at the time.
