I used to have this problem with my cats as well.
I went to the carpet store and bought a small piece of outdoor carpeting, you know the kind the supposed to look like grass.
It works great at getting the litter out of their paws, and they seem to like the way it feels.
It is also made out of plastic so you can just take it outside and rinse it with a hose.

I have no easy solutions but creative I can do. By the way, if you rent, don't try this!
I cut a hole in the wall and decorated it to look like those mouse holes in the cartoons. The hole leads into the closet where the litter box sits. It's a big adventure for the cat and there is no mess or smell in the house. You still have to clean up the litter all over the floor, but at least it's contained to the closet.
By the way, my cat Mr. Milo has his own solution to the problem. When he steps out of the litter box he goes to the water dish and washes his paws. So far the other cats have not caught on to this solution. He was a shelter cat so he must have picked that one up on the road.

Have you tried switching to a different litter? I got some at a store because it was buy one get one free. Now I find litter all over in the bathroom. I did not have this problem before and will be going back to the more expensive litter when I am done with this stuff. Good Luck!

our cat litter box has a lip on it that is about 3 cm deep (its quite a big box) and this seems to work fine. Even though my kitten still digs around, the lip just keeps it all inside the box. I suppose there is no way you can keep 100% of the litter in the box but the one we have is very good (we bought it from pets at home and it was only about £5.99). When we go to stay with my boyfriends mum and dad and we take the cat with us, we have to hoover every day because they just have a normal box, but with the one we have at home we don't have to hoover extra atall, just do it when you would normally hoover :)

My cat always kicked up more sand when the litter box was full. When I cleaned his box more often he didn't dig or kick as much. I think a litter box with higher wall may help. But you could just try using less litter and scooping the box more often.

put duct tape on thier feet.... i'm kidding
you could always toilet train your cats, that's what i did. now i don't have to worry about pesky litter, or litterbox smell in my apartment. & it's easier to clean than a litterbox; if you see a tootsie roll floating in the toilet, just flush & voila! "litterbox" is cleaned! you just have to remember to leave the lid up for kitty!

YA, you put down one of those out door mats, the kind you wipe your feet on---looks like a brush--- well, before ya lay it down, put a small rug down, then the mat--wah-lah---no litter on the floor.
