I was talking with a pentecostal person who said they pray in "tongues." They said they don't know what they're praying for, but the holy ghost does know what they're saying....

Why would you need to pray if god/holy spirit already knows....

This makes no sense to me, and sounds like classic circular thinking. But, in effort to understand, if possible, ...

What say you?

PS... I'm atheist (firmly)... just wanted to be educated on this issue as to the christian perspective. It's very cool that so many perspectives are being offered.

Thanks!

It's like a nonsexual orgasm they get all hyped up on god and being part of the crowd they just start babbling nonsense. First time I heard it I thought someone was screaming in russian or something and other people were translating, its absolutely insane. Pentecostals are THE strangest group.

And uh... it's MORSE CODE for the person that answered before me... jesus christ.

Tongues didn't cease as one poster has stated.
Any one who has received Jesus ... has also been baptized in the Spirit, therefore can receive the gift of speaking in tongues by the Spirit. This poster has for sure listened only to his no pentecostal pastor... and has failed to study to show himself approved.

Speaking in tongues is actually two different types (ways). One is for the public... but you better have an interpreter there.... second is alone and the Spirit actual takes your prayer and speaks in tongues, the person may be unaware what is being prayed but that's ok.

1) Tongues has not ceased. The Bible does not say they have, it says they will. (the same time knowledge ceases).

2) Most manifestation of tongues is contrived, I've watch people break into tongues under the direct order of the man on the platform - and that isn't Jesus.

3) Not all tongues are from God. I've heard christians cursing God in their tongue language, while everyone else around was thinking it great.

4) Tongues are seen as spirit talking, where your spirit is talking direct to God.

5) Tongues are not to be puffed up - they are one of the least gifts, oe of the easiest to fake and are not as common as most pentacostal churches would have you think - does every follower of Jesus get tongues?

I have been to a church that wanted me to pray in tongues. I beleive that speaking in tongues is highly misused. The Bible says an interpreter should be on hand to translate. Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift and I think that a lot of people "try" to have the gift and they don't or perhaps is just Satan fooling them.

It is not necessary to speak in tongues, in fact, I think it's all a show most of the time. I'm not saying that people can't do this, it is a spiritual gift, but soooo many people misuse is and I have a hard time beleiving people when I see it.

I'm not pentecostal, but I say that it's not praying. It's a gift of the spirit, and if you speak in tounges, it's only real if there's an interpreter. It sounds sketchy to me, I would steer clear.

I haven't had good experiences with pentecostals, so I'd be wary of anything they say re: Christianity and the Bible.

What I've seen sounds like excited babble that gives them a euphoria.

I think the gift of tongues in the bible was originally given at Pentecost to allow teaching to people in all languages. The speaker was able to express himself to the listener so that he could understand the message, not babble.

I was taught that when the bible talks about preaching in " tongues " that it is actually referring to the followers talking in foreign languages since the word had to be spread in various countries of different languages. It could only be done with the Holy Spirit being in their body..

This stuff in these modern days of people speaking in BABBLE is NOT of God.

the word of God says that when you "pray in the spirit", it edifies you.
I pray in tongues to edify my self (builds me up spiritually).
As a believer, I am under constant assault to NOT believe and walk with God. When I speak in tongues, it reminds me that my Lord is risen, that I am filled with the spirit, and that the power of God dwells within me.
Religion, the secular world, TV, radio, friends, family, signs by the road, etc, etc, try to bring my mind to anything but God.
speaking in tongues (which I can do silently to myself anytime) is my constant reminder that I am a born again son of God.

"Why would you need to pray if god/holy spirit already knows...."

I'm not pentecostal and don't know much about speaking in tongues.. but I think we need to pray to the lord (even though he already knows what we need) because he wants a relationship with us, it has to be a two way street.. and also because we are to humble ourselves before the Lord.
