power.
the "spirit" is often the intention behind the word. so as Jesus said [paraphrased], "don't just not commit adultery, don't even do it in your mind!", the law said "don't commit adultery, it's wrong", Jesus says not to do adultery, or the motives behind it: lust, anger....

The Spirit causes us (when we submit to Him and set our minds on Him) to fulfill what the law was after - love; Loving God and loving our neighbor.
The law was given to show us that we could NOT no matter how hard we tried, keep it and therefore we needed mercy and a Savior. It wasn't given as a means of justification where if you keep it you'll be righteous or "right with God."
The law is like a mirror. When you look into it, it shows you an accurate state of your being. It's purpose is to send you to the soap and water, toothbrush and razor, etc. which is Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Jesus' blood has washed us clean and made us right with God but the law was given to send us to Christ. If I look at the law in the context of it's original purpose then it is a Blessing because it leads me to Christ. Anything that leads me closer to Jesus is a Blessing! Anything that keeps me from Him is a curse!!

You are driving down the road and a policeman pulls you over. You have broken the law by running a stop sign. The punishment for breaking the law is a fine.
This is like the law of GOD. There are 613 laws that need to be kept in order to not break it. The punishment for breaking many of the laws is death.
The same policeman notices you have a University of Georgia Tee Shirt on and ask you if you are a bull dog fan. You reply that you are currently attending UGA and are on your way to a game. The policeman then apologizes and yells out "GO Dawgs" As he hurries you on your way.
This is the law of the Spirit. If you belong to Jesus through his finished work on the cross it is like attending UGA.
:) I rekon it's a bit like that.

You can either serve your sinful nature or spirit nature, but never both at the same time. The Holy Spirit will guide and also convict you of what you do wrong. The laws are of what God expects from us, the spirit is God dwelling within the christian. Hope this helps out.
Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

The wage of Sin is Death (the law sin and death), and Jesus have died and Risen, so The wage was paid by Him.
Now, we know that we are already paid if We follow the law of the Spirit of life, that is, to Love God above anythning else, and Love your neighbors (specially atheist) as you Love yourself.

The law was written in stone.
The law of the Spirit is written in your heart ( spirit ).
Jer 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Your scripture reference is talking about two different types of law--Jesus' law or new covenant, and the law, or problem of sin.
