They sort of don't expect you to pay... not anytime soon. The recent increase in Pell Grants will come at some heavy costs. There is talk of dissolving other financial aid programs in order to pay for Pell increases (how would you like to lose a $2500 SEO Grant just to get a $260 increase in Pell?). Middle income students (the ones who show financial need but aren't Pell- or SEOG-eligible) will probably be hurt the most.

I've worked in Financial Aid for years now and and am equally frustrated by what's been occurring. Here's the problem, though: people complain but don't DO anything about it. Many Financial Aid administrators are upset about this and have sent letter after letter to local, state, and national legislators. The response that we inevitably get is that they appreciate our input but that they need to hear from the STUDENTS. They don't believe that college administrators are "unbiased" when we ask them to give us more money to help students.

So, please, do your research into this issue and write a letter to someone, anyone, in power. Ask them to increase Federal Student Aid funding overall (they can't just cut one program to pay for another). Get your friends to do the same (even if they just copy your letter!). I'm not just blowing smoke when I tell you that THAT's what will make the biggest difference.

{Note: it's typically only the tip-top people (the President and Board of Trustees) at a school that set it's tuition costs. College administrators (who probably make less than most students' parents do) don't really get a say...}

You're absolutely right; it is a shame. Nowadays it costs as much as buying a brand new luxury car to earn a Bachelors degree, not to mention with all the interest accumulating on student loans, students can expect to pay thousands dollars more for their education. Money is being extorted from youth who struggle to make ends meet. I don't know if this will ever change; each year the price of tuition increases.

I am feeling higher tuition rates pressure.The only thing college students can really do is write to their congressman,because they are cutting funds dedicated to finanicial aid and they arent hearing complaints from anybody they are only going to continue to cut the funds,and make other people happu

Pay?! How dare they?! Quit your whining, you baby! Higher education is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Get off your *** and get to work, or find scholarships or grants. It's called "working your way through college", and it's how most people do it.
