I am on tegretol, but I am also on several other medications.

I have gained ALOT of weight, but I do not know if it is caused by tegretol or the other medications.

I do know that the majority of people who use drugs prescribed by pyschiatrists gain weight. Some gain only 5 pounds, others report gaining 100+ pounds.

Some drugs induce sweet cravings, so that you are more likely to eat high calorie foods. Other drugs slow the metabolism.

But truth is, I don't think the drug companies are sure of the mechanism for weight gain. They try to deny it does not exist, but it is clearly a problem.

Best advice: Watch what you eat and continue to exercise daily.

Yes I just went back on Effexor and I have gained about 15lbs. I don't know if it's making eat more, But one of your answers said some make you crave sweets and that is what I am doing. I'll lose it, but I'd rather have a few extra pounds on me than feel like I did without my meds,

My son had a major weight gain on lithium. He was switched to tegretol and has lost of the weight. Tegretol is supposed to be "weight neutral" and normally does not cause weight gain.

If you are on certain antidepressants they definitely could cause weight gain.

YES!

I gained eighty pounds once. I got off that crap and lost the weight. I feel WAY better off those dangerous toxic medications.
