I'm buying my wife a block set of kitchen knives for her birthday...think I'm going with a Henckles set. I know her well, I'm sure she's going to love it. I've asked for advice about which brand, a couple people seem to think this is an inappropriate gift for a woman. Why would cooking supplies be inappriopriate when guys are always asking for tools? I got a floor jack for Valentines Day and couldn't be happier... P.S. I am not a redneck, I'm pretty well educated so keep the snide comments to yourselves.

I think kitchen knife sets are a wonderful idea for a present. Some of the highest quality kitchen knife brands are the German J.A. Henckels and Wusthof.

The set may include...

- a chef's knife.
- a paring knife.
- a bread knife.
- a wood block for storing knives.
- steel for honing.
- scissors...

Choose a set that includes knives your wife firmly intends to use (some sets contain a great number of knives, some of which she may never use).

My whole family uses Henckles, but a lot of chefs prefer the Wustoff. The person was correct in saying buy the better brand of Henckles. I have the 4 star and I like them a lot. My brother in law has the 5 star, but I didn't like the shape of the handle on them. The only thing I don't like as a gift is an appliance. I don't consider a good set of knives as an appliance. As long as your wife has been looking at knives, I think it's a great idea. They will last forever and are worth the investment. Just make sure you wash them by hand. Consider buying a sharpening stone to keep them sharpened properly. So many people think the steel is to sharpen. You can buy a stone at Williams Sonoma for around $60.00.

It's a great gift, and you know her... we don't. Unless she is a professional chef, she won't need Wustoff.... they are excellent kinves, no doubt, but pricey. I have a block set of Henckles and I love the knives. The blade holds a fantastic edge and the handle is flexible and comfortable. You've made an excellent choice. I also have a couple of Sabatier ( France) knives that I like very much. Also, high carbon stainless. You might want to check those out, too. I think your wife is going to be very pleased with her savvy husband !!!

I got a set of knives as a gift from my boyfriend, I did nto think anything of it becasue I needed them and enjoy cooking. I guess it is a bit impersonal to some but if she enjoys cooking and you are sure she would like them then why not. If I can tell you there is a tradition in Britatin that if you give anything sharp you should put a coin in with it or it is bad luck. Now Ithink on it my boyfriend and I broke up not long after so be sure ot put a coin in there!

Myself I prefer Whustoff's, actually the gift of knives is great for both of you, the right tool for the job. OK is everybody gone now? Good,( ok you give her the knives and say you need a new grinder so you can keep the knives sharp for her, even though we know you'll use a stone, get my drift?)

Some people who don't like to cook may think of it as a house gift or some thing, like you were trying to pass off a new vacuum cleaner as an aniversary gift or something. These people are uneducated.
I think it is a great gift, but if you start feeling insecure about it pick up some of her favorite flowers as well.

If your wife likes to cook, knives are an excellent gift. I would go with Wutstoff over Henckles.

If she hates to cook, then it looks like you either don't like her cooking or you don't really understand her.
