I am a huge fan of French toast, so I can tell you that the very best French toast I've ever made at home was with homemade Challah. You'll find a link to the Challah recipes at Allrecipes.com. They are rated and reviewed by users, so you can read comments about the end results from other cooks.

Challah is a special kind of bread, enriched with whole eggs, used for the Jewish Shabbat and holidays. I am not Jewish; I just make it because I love the taste and texture of Challah and use up the loaf to make French toast. It is a very rich bread, and it soaks up the French toast batter very well.

In the absence if Challah or the time required to make it, I either use French bread or Texas Toast, the thick-sliced package white bread you can get in just about any grocery store. It works very well and is the most economical way to get great French toast.

I've got a great French toast batter recipe, but I have misplaced it at the moment. If you'd like it, feel free to email me.

Happy Cooking!
Maria

Best Bread For French Toast

I agree on the Texas toast for french bread. The thickness of the bread holds well to the liquid you're soaking it into, so you won't have to worry about the bread falling apart as you take it out of the bowl to cook. I know certain grocery stores don't sell it, so if you can't find it, just get a un-cut loaf of bread from the bakery and slice it extra thick.

I like to use a wide italian or french bread. I slice it thick, then then let it sit out for an hour before making french toast.

Texas Toast is Perfect for French Toast.

originally french toast was made from dried out french bread that was then soaked in an egg, cream batter and fried. I still do it that way with dried sour dough or french bread. It prevents the bread from getting to mushy and adds great texture.

Texas Toast or BBQ bread. Depends on which brand you get as to what it is called, but they are both the same thing.

Use french bread but cut the slices thick then cut the slices in half but not all the way and in the middle stuff it with thin sliced bananas or whatever yum.
