I am very color-challenged and need lots of help with coming up with a color for my kitchen. It's not been updated since the 1970s. All of the cabinets are a white laminate. The countertop is a while laminate. The stove, microwave, and refrigerator are all white. The floor is cork tiles, which is kind of a honey to medium brown, almost like maple color. The room is fairly small, but bright and sunny. The rest of the house is painted white (for now). We live near the ocean, so I like to go for the beach cottage look. My family tends to prefer blues, greens, and golds, but we're open to suggestion on this one. We're hoping to bring the kitchen into this century, a little at a time, starting with the paint. Any and all suggestions are very much appreciated! Thanks.

Being early 70s and no plans to renovate its kinda hard for me to picture what would fit in but here are a few of my thoughts for the type of look you want to go with.

These are behr's colors but if you prefer a different paint im sure you can match it once you pick up the card from a homedepot of another type of store.

Wheeping wisteria as a main color (a bluish tone with a slight purple tone) good seascape color. It will offset the white appliances and cabinets.

Another option is morning breeze. a light mid tone blue that again will offset the white appliances and cabinets nicely, since it goes with while and slight off white(eggshell).

The edging or trim can be either something the blends with the brown in the cork floor, is an off white or a variantion of blue.

I would recommend staying away from golds in the kitchen.

Choosing either blues, reds or earth tones.

I'm studying to be an interior designer. I hate whites! this depends on if you are going to change the tile to a different color, but, assuming you're not and you'll stay with the same maple color, and if you like bright colors, go with a light blue for the walls, and for the kitchen appliances, keep them white of course and for the cabinets and countertop, go for a soft beige color. But, even though you like the room to be bright and sunny, this is what I would do if I were you. What would go really well with a maple color is dark green. The cabinets and countertop wooden, but if you don't want to replace them, find a similar maple color to go with your floor to paint them with. If you re replacing the appliances like the microwave and fridge, go with black, and a silver and black fridge. If not, white is fine. And to maybe add a fun effect, find a pattern wallpaper and cut a thin strip that could go around the middle of your kitchen. I would look for the wallpaper with a big bunch of wine grapes on it (i've seen it before) or go with your choice that you think would go best. the wallpaper is up to you, but maybe it would be fun. Are you planning to paint the rest of your house? I did my grandmother's kitchen. It looks like an old 1950's diner, with black and white tile, candy apple red walls, and black cabinets and countertop. the rest of her house is painted different. Her bedroom I also did. It is a mint green and the trim is a maroon. Her bathroom is maroon with mint green trim. I hope I helped you. Good luck!

Go with what you and your family likes, that will probably be the most satisfying over time. So stick with the blues and greens. It will go with the ocean setting too. I'm always one to bring the outdoors inside. Keep your cupboards white, maybe repaint them. Then you can buy tiling for the counter tops that you can do yourself. Buy smaller tiles in different shades of blue and green and you can create a mosaic effect by placing them strategically to spread out all the different shades. Once you have them all glued in place, you can grout them to create a beautiful shine and finished look. As for you floor, you can find cheap tiling or linoleum to replace what you have. I don't know what your price range is. You can go bold and bright with the floor to matchthe countertops. Get some pendant lighting to go over the sink and dining area in a silver or white color. Then buy a nuetral beige or cream shaded clor rug to go underneath your dining table/area. Use white sheer curtains for windows to let the sunlight in. If you balance the bright and fun colors out with something more plain and muted like white, it will all tie in together nicely.

ok, this isn't exactly answering your question, but, why not take a picture of your kitchen to a paint store and ask their opinion?
That said, with all white and an earth tone floor you pretty much can do anything....personally, I wouldn't go with a cool color(blues, greens) in a kitchen just because it's a comfy family kind of place...I would pick a warm color(my kitchen is a verrrrrry pale orange with lots of natural wood and. The counter top has dk blue, slate and a light orange pattern onit. I know it sounds weird, but it looks like stone and is gorgeous).

I would say a warm nicotine yellow, sort of a French restaurant yellow if you know what I mean. Would work well with the cork floors and the sunny light in the house, and it will keep the kitchen bright. Good luck!

I had a small older kitchen and love the beach and islands, I choose a light cream clor as a base and stencialed palm trees, I forget the color green, but like palm trees, it came out great and everyone that saw it for the first time really thought it was wall paper.....It didnt look tacky or over powering....

my 1st floor plan is an open plan with kitchen at one end. The color for the main rooms is beige (or taupe) and the kitchen is the same color but darker tint with some gray and greenish hue to it. Looks great with lighter to med wood cabinets and furniture and oak floor.

go to hgtv.com for some good ideas, or lowe's.com. Lowe's has a virtual painter you can use for free to "paint" sample rooms, i.e. kitchens. You can try out hundreds of colors to see how it'll look before you paint. They have designer palettes incl. one called seaside retreat, which has mostly ocean & beachy colors. You can use this site to plan out the colors for your whole house.

try a combo of sea mist green and tan . you can buy
either decals or make your own designs with stencils or paint stamps of sea stars or shells on the cabinets. And shells can be collected on the beach to further accent your shell motif.

If your floors are a med. brown, I would paint the walls a light tan...or antique white color..
you may accent with any color ....., and change them around easily, but walls, you are stuck with.
Mine are a creamy white, with white trim, and light maple cabinets.
I love it. I accent sometimes with bright colors, sometimes with warm colors.
Have fun!!!
