If you were to stay in HK and attend the Canton Fair, it would involve a fair amount of travelling. The Canton Fair takes place in Guangzhou, a completely separate city some distance away. It's possible to do, however, if you're just going for a short visit. You would need to take the Intercity train to Guangzhou - that takes over three hours (when you factor in the immigration queues and waiting room time) each way and costs US$25 - US$30 each way depending on what class of ticket you buy.
That train must be booked in advance (http://www.kcrc.com.hk) because tickets are in high demand around the time of the Canton Fair.
To be honest, if you are planning any more than a single four hour visit, you would be strongly advised to stay in Guangzhou (or a nearby city like Dongguan) instead. Book your hotel in advance because the city's hotels really do fill up during the trade fairs.

Canton Fair is in Guangzhou (was called Canton in the old days). HK is in HK. That's two different locations, about 3hours bus ride, by train is around 2hours.

downtown Hongkong is 180/190 kms from downtown Guangzhou, you need a visa for hongkong and a visa to enter PRC , most international flights will take you to hk , and from there you can even take the skypier ferry to Shenzhen ,without leaving the airport, or i think may even take you to Guangzhou ( where is the Canton fair )
