I'm thinking about joining a studio. I've been to a couple of classes and have enjoyed it but I'm not sure if there are any drawbacks as far as health is concerned. Are there any health risks I should be aware of? I am female - 39 years old - with no known health issues.

If you are in good health, then doing Bikram yoga should be okay. Those who should be more cautious in doing this style of yoga are those who have low or high blood pressure (the heat has a tendency to make others feel dizzy and lightheaded) and those who have knee injuries.

When the instructor tells you to "lock you knees", I wouldn't advise you to push them all the way back, which would cause your knee joints to hyperextend. Keep your knees straight, but more importantly make sure you engage your quadriceps (your thigh muscles), especially when doing forward bends and the standing poses with straight legs. Engaging your quadriceps will protect your knee joint from any stress or injury.

Also, since you are doing it in a heated room, your body is much more flexible in this environment. Do not attempt the poses in the same degree of flexibility in a non-heated room. Otherwise, you will risk straining your muscles.

As a certified yoga instructor, I have tried various styles of yoga. After trying a Bikram class, the comments above are based on my knowledge on anatomy and training.

Namaste.

I did Bikram for 8 years without any issues. It is a great option for flexibility and weight loss.

No. It seems to be OK. As a nursing student, all I can say, with any exercising program, consult your health care professional first.
