There was so much intermarriage between the royalty of the two countries that it was natural for the English monarchs to be able to speak French. There were also other incentives for the English royal family to know French, notably the dowry of Eleanor of Aquitaine: Normandy, Maine, Anjou, Poitou, Guyenne and Gascony. These provinces were part of England for many centuries. Even without the French associations of the English monarchy, it should be remembered that all educated people in Western Europe in those days were able to converse in Latin.

French was the official language of the English court during the 1300's. Part of the reason was they were trying to find an international language they could all speak, and French seemed a logical choice after Latin. Most of the English Nobels spoke fluent French at that time.

Did you ever hear of the Normans? The Normans were from the Normandy region of France, and at one time their king (I don't remember his name) invaded and conquered England. So, the official language of the rulers of England would have been French. There were probably a lot of people in England who learned French at that time; and I wouldn't doubt that a lot the French living in England learned English.

After 1066 the aristocracy of England was largely replaced by the Norman French, who, of course spoke French. They communicated very easily with people back in France.

well they both could tell that each other knew the same number of letters, and things for words to represent, so they knew that they both knew that and when they thought of something new to do, they knew exactly what all the things they were looking at were, so they used the items, as if a language
