A wedge is a simple machine shaped like an inclined plane. A wedge is actually like a moving inclined plane. An easy way to see how a wedge works is to think of it as an inclined plane standing on its narrow end. A fairly weak force, applied to the wide end of a wedge whose narrow end is being pushed into something, will send a strong force pushing out at the sides. An example would be to take a wedge of steel and bang it into the end of a log, the log will split open. We can use the wedge action to cut and shape ice and wood sculptures, clay or whatever.
A wedge may seem like a simple tool. But the wedge is very important while doing work, crafts, or at play. Yes, even play! A shovel is acting as a wedge while you're shoveling the sand or snow that you're playing in. I think you'll agree that it's a lot easier to move an object using a wedge than if it were moved by only your hands.

Examples include axes, nails and teeth. Knives, Scissors, and chisels can sometimes be used as wedges, however, they are more fundamentally cutting implements. A door stop (door wedge) can also be regarded as wedge, but its main function is to provide a friction between the door and the ground rather than to separate materials: nevertheless the friction generates a force which prevents the door from moving.

Obvious examples include:

Steel wedge used to split wood.
Wooden wedge used under a car or truck tire to keep the vehicle in place.
Rubber wedge used to keep a door in place.

Less obvious examples include:

The golf club: Pitching wedge
The wedge brake http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/EWB_0538_1_1315425.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.physorg.com/news6781.html&h=180&w=180&sz=12&hl=en&start=79&tbnid=XwrQDLlYbelYtM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwedge%26start%3D72%26ndsp%3D18%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rlz%3D1T4GWYX_en___US207%26sa%3DN
And a mechanical advantage used in machines in gearing and pulley and belt transmission systems. Where a small cog is used to stop or start movement.

Door stop.

When an axe splits a log, it cuts in but then acts as a wedge to split the log.
