Can you house 2 male canaries in the same cage if there are no females?

I always see males in pet shops housed together but I have read not to do it. Which is right?

I recently got 2 male canaries from a friend who's a breeder. he told me it wasn't a problem to put them in the same cage together and to separate them if they started fighting at all. They were getting along fine until I came home last night and found one of them hiding under the food dish....I put him in a separate cage right away, but he died today. They must've had quite a fight while I was at work yesterday. Very upsetting, I wish I could've done something. So, I wouldn't house 2 males together unless you're around to supervise......
