Public Safety is a broad umbrella term that takes in those governmental organizations whose primary objective is the protection of the general population. This protection may be in the form of civil protection, criminal protection, or physical protection, such as those that may occur in a natural disaster. This protection is typically provided by three primary organizations: police, fire, and EMS.

Additional organizations and job titles may include the American Red Cross (quasi-governmental), US Coast Guard, animal control officers, security officers, parking enforcement officers, police dispatchers, public prosecutors, code enforcement officers, utility inspectors, and even judges.
