My ex wrote me an email stating for the past 6 years he had hated himself and that he had decided to change for the better. That he was tired of throwing his life away. In there he also threw something in about another chance and starting things new. Can a person truly change if they have decided to do it on their own in their best interest? We are still friends. Its not like something terrible happened to cause us breaking up. The timing was just really wrong. I still have feelings for him. I just have not said anything because we were trying to be just friends again.

Anyone can change. Try this new him out...you just might see how much he did change, but if he didn't change to your liking, try the friend thing again, but be careful not to mess with his feelings people who go through that much trouble to change tend to snap.

I believe a person can truly change for the better for their best interests only if they are serious about and really willing to do that.

i am not sure about this one 6 years is a long time to be away. also do you love him thats the main thing. if you are serious about him then maybe you could work it out but its probably best just to stay friends for now.

Yes.. but usually it takes something 'traumatic' in someone's life in order to give them the motavation to "TRULY" change. 6 years is enough time to change, depending on what he needed to change. I'd say if you still have feelings - go for it! good luck.

If you feel that he is really sincere about it, then it wouldn't hurt to give it another try. Maybe you should talk on the phone instead of email to really discuss your feelings. Best of luck!

Well to be honest with you, people do change if they do decide to do it for them self not for somebody. Well that is up to you if you want to get with him. If you feel that is worth a try going back then go for it but if it does not feel right then you should not do it. Just go with your instincts.

A person can change his or her mind and from what you write, it sounds like your 'ex' might have had a change of heart.
Sit down with him and discuss it.
