brain death is the irreversible loss of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem. It is clinically pronounced. It can be missleading because although brain function has ceased there is still presence of heart rate and blood pressure sustained by vaso-active medications, and breathing continues by mechanical ventilators.

Brain death means the persons heart and lungs are functioning but brain is not functioning. During that state generally a person remains in coma .One cannot predict how long he will remain alive .Since the brain is not functioning he may not talk, make movements of his hands and feet.He may not be remembering things. One of my brothers had the same problem recently due to severe haemmarrhage in brain due to high BP. He died after brain death for 15 days. My mother also died of the same and was in coma for 10 days and died. Thats why one should take regular medication, and frequent chckups for high BP. Be careful if you are having high bp.Dont neglect taking medicines to control BP to normal.

Nervous cells need oxygen to survive, when the supply with oxygen to the brain is altered for a longer time than 3-4 minutes, nervous cells die! (the term is anoxia)
The patient is in coma.
The EEG confirms the electric activity of the nervous cells, if the EEG doesn`t show any activity then the brain is death.

due to injury or stroke. The oxygen has been cut off to the brain. The part of the brain that controls breathing and heart rate is still alive but otherwise the person isn't "living" They are brain dead

Brain death is when you are alive but in a comotose state with no brain activity noted when they do an EEG of your brain. It shows not activity no matter if they poke you with a pin or bang cymbals together.
