Sorry, former Army, but this might help.... Navy Tattoo policy.

Also, talk to a recruiter and consult with them before you get it.

Iam a Navy vet and I have a few tatoos my self
but to answer your ? shipmate according to UCMJ
uniform code of military justice , tattos are not alowed
there is an article refering to this and it mentions that tatoos
piercings, etc is/are considered willfull destruction or defacement of Gov. Property you are that property.
now this law is loosely inforced according to Comand
I would not get a back tattoo as the artist if he's any good , will have you come back to get it done as back tattoo can not be done in one sitting .
Furthermore shipmate if your back gets infected (god forbid)
and you have to go medical and your put on sick leave
because of this you can be writ up for willfull destruction of Gov. property as well as Dereliction of duty beacause the tattoo/ infection caused you not to be able to do your job therefore causing your Ship/ comand to be less battle effective . Now if your going to be a Navy Seal tattoos or distinctive marking are deffintely not allowed as this is for your protectetion if by chance or missfortune you are captured
and you hvae a tatoo of a say a anchor you could put the team in danger as the enemy now nows your from the US
and you've compromised your mission.
also , if see any Navy Seals they do NOT have any visable tatt's on them /ie arms legs etc. If want a tattoo and your not going to be a Seal stick with the traditional arms or legs if you must get a back tatt , be adivised the take time and are a
lot of money a sleave tatto alone can run up 3 to 4 even 600.00 and remember NEVER GET A TATT DRUNK!!!
what ever you get stays with you so make sure its something 20 yrs done the road you can look at and not regret I got mine in 84& 86 and Istill love em. To be safe, you can also check with your Command or a JAG, reg,.tattoos, UCMJ.
Best of luck.

The armed services frown on tattoos that will show while in uniform, therefore tattoos below the elbows, above the line of a t-shirt, including the neck are discouraged.
Frankly, most intelligent people grow out of the fad and desire to have tattoos. Many short sighted individuals have been forced to live with their youthful indiscretions, others have gone through the ordeal of having them removed.

You can get in but it will hold you back. The military is by it's nature a more conservative culture. The not so subtle discrimination will be that you are weak minded, uneducated and a follower.... not a leader. And as you move up the rungs which require more competition with educated people it will get worse.
Seals are not all about brawn. It requires languages, knowledge of cultures and the ability to operate in many places in the world. You will have one big not being able to blend in mark.
So basically by getting the tatoo you are basically marking yourself as an idiot. No offence but I assumed you wanted an honest answer.

If you are not in the Navy yet, you should wait until your in. Once your in you could have some troubles w/ certain assignments because it is an identifying mark on your body. The SEALs prefer no identiying marks for thier candidates but may take exeptions to tattoos. My real advice is to not get one at all. They are so faddish.

Though if I was in the Seals/special forces, I would think twice about getting a tatoo. Think about it, if you get a tatoo with your unit number or it or a Navy trident, and if you are captured, the enemy will know who and what unit you belong to. It has been the policy of many enemy nations to kill or execute "commandos" or special operations solders if they are captured. Secondly, most special operations soldiers operate covertly on the battlefield and behind enemy lines--usually in city environments and you don't want to give your identity away.

As long as the tattoo is not offensive, not gang related, not racist, and can not be scene when you are in uniform you should be fine.
Just make sure you are still able to do your job after you get the tattoo and to take care of it until it heals, otherwise you may get in trouble for not being able to do your job.

Its all good. It will be covered up when you are in uniform. If it was exposed it cant cover more than 25% of the exposed area. Or you will have to wear long sleeves or pants.
