A majority of the colonizers of North America were English speakers.
Natives learned English to engage in peaceful relations.
However, many did not learn English because it wasn't necessary and they wanted to maintain their culture. These people were persecuted and their children were FORCED to learn English.
Many Native children were Kidnapped and Forced to attend White Christian boarding schools. If they were caught speaking their Native language they would be beat. At some times they might have their tounge pierced or fingertips cut off. It is a Brutal history.
I am a Native woman.
EDIT: The land bridge theory, is just that a THEORY. There is in fact more evidence to disprove it than to prove it. And the evidence cited by the user below is in fact VERY controversial. Also the website listed as a source is very controversial. For more information on this topic please read "Red Earth White Lies"

The United States speaks English because it was originally formed from English colonies on the east coast. Spaniards landed in Mexico and central America and the Carribean, where former Spanish colonies speak Spanish. Notice that some former English, Portugese, Dutch and French colonies in this area still speak the languages that they did as colonies.

The English were the principal colonizers of North America in the 17th and 18th centuries, and brought the language with them, overwhelming the native American culture.

Because after the spanish arrived an abundance of english people started to make settlements, and eventually we started using our own slang, dropped a few words, and lost the accent. thats pretty much it.
