Not necessarily. You could keep the partition you currently have without deleting it. Then install XP on a different partition

If you are just repairing windows, it will update the windows files but leave all your software and files there.

I think you have to delete and format the partition for it to completely format the partition.

I installed Windows XP crappily before by installing it in a different folder. It created a new installation, so I had two installations of XP so when you boot up you select the version you want to start up.... That bugged me, so I formatted everything and did it from scratch.

If you choose the option to do so. It's called a Clean Install.
