I am a 17 year old junior boy. My real/first name is kathleen. I dont know why i have a girl name and i have had to deal with it during all my school years. I have somewhat gotten used to having it, but i am just wondering if anyone else thinks it's strange for a guy to be named kathleen

Kathleen is slightly unusual for a guy, but there's the song "a boy named Sue". Do you know why you were named Kathleen, was it for a family member, or someone special to your parents. If you feel very bothered by it you could legally have it changed and that's not that expensive. But if it is a name that suits you, keep it. Good luck and God Bless.

Yes, it is unusual to have a name so distinctly female, but that doesn't mean it has to be a problem. You can focus on being a confident and happy individual and allow others to know you for who you are, not what you are called, and they will get used to your name being Kathleen. If it bothers you (you didn't really say), you could go by your middle name, or you could certainly change it when you are 18 and of legal age. I'm not sure why your parents would have given a boy a female name. My daughter has a very feminine name which is not unusual in the least, yet she doesn't like it. I tell her that she is welcome to change it when she turns 18. Since she is still very young, she has many years yet to either get used to her name and accept it, or decide for certain that she will one day change it. I have never liked being called Carolyn, which is my real name, so I go by the name of Cari, which I identify with more. Many people don't like their names. Still, if you are confident, people won't really care. Anyone whose opinions are worthwhile anyway, won't care what your name is because they will like you for you.

Definitely unusual, but that doesn't mean it's bad :) I think some pretty cool nicknames could come out of Kathleen - I had a male friend who used to go by Kat (his name was something like Katlian).

Maybe your parents were sure they were having a girl and hadn't come up with any boys names?

I have never heard of a guy being named Kathleen. Is there some significance to it? I am a female with a male name (Shawn) so I feel your pain.

Well, its unusual. But think about it, a lot of people are taking the name/gender thing a little over the line. Taylor, tyler, jordan, etc generally boys names are now becoming somewhat commen girls names.
My ex bf's middle name was Leslie. I know that the Skylar is generally a boys name but as well is suitable for a girl.
Take it in stride, come up with a cool nick name for yourself! ;)

I have a niece whose first name is Vincent. I also have a brother whose first name is Marie. We went around this by spelling it "Mari" but his birth certificate and official records still carry the feminine spelling.

Parents! What can I say?

If you really want to, when you become an adult, you can petition the court for a change of name. There'll be some confusion with your old records, though. At least you have an option.

it's definitely an odd choice for a male name in this day and age. if you're uncomfortable with it, you can easily shorten it to a nickname such as kat or kath or use your middle name (if it's not another traditional modern girl's name.) however, since you said you've 'somewhat gotten used to having it,' why not own it? i mean, are you named after an amazing ancestor or relative? after someone famous? or can you bask in the individuality of having a non-traditonal male name? i say go for it, kathleen!

I think its alright to be named that im sure there is a lot of meaning behind it. I know a couple of guys with femalish names
Keri, Ashley, Erinn.
They all have those names because their parents wanted to hold onto a family legacy or just thought it was nice. I bet your name has made you a stronger more rounded person.
