Tea tree oil is a natural plant oil with antiseptic & fungicidal properties. It comes from the leaves of a plant called Melaleuca alternifolia. This plant is found mostly in Australia and there's over 300 varieties of the tea tree....But only one kind can produce this germ-fighting oil.
We can thank the Aborigines of Australia - who discovered the powers of this oil - hundreds of years ago. Back then, they would crush the leaves or boil them in water to use the oil. Nowadays, we use steam to distill the leaves to extract the oil. Only the leaves are harvested, so the trees continue to produce more leaves over time. What's good about this is you don't have to kill the tree to get the oil.
Why is Tea tree oil so good at killing germs?
This healthy oil contains a substance called, Terpinen 4 OL. There are some other ingredients in this oil - but Terpinen 4 OL is the main ingredient with germ-killing powers. Terpinen 4 OL is sort of like Mother Nature's version of turpentine.
When you buy a bottle of this oil, make sure you read the label to see how much Terpinen 4 OL is contained in the bottle - the higher the percentage, the more potent your oil will be.
What can you use Tea tree oil on ?
This healthy oil has a number of different uses. A study performed in 1990 in Australia compared the effectiveness of 5% tea tree oil to 5% benzoyl peroxide for treating acne.
Researchers discovered that tea tree oil was just as effective as benzoyl peroxide for reducing the number of inflamed lesions. Tea tree oil also caused fewer side effects - with less redness, irritation, flaking and dryness.

Tea tree oil is also an effective treatment for Athlete's foot. Researchers compared the effectiveness and safety of 25% and 50% tea tree oil on 158 patients with tinea pedis (athletes foot). They found that 72% of patients using the 25% tea tree oil showed a marked improvement. Over 67% of the patients using the 50% tea tree oil also experienced improvement in their symptoms.

Are you looking for other uses for tea tree oil?
Traditionally, it was used to help disinfect wounds. Some people used on insect bites, and skin scrapes. It also makes a great addition to a vaporizer for chest colds, bronchitis and flus.
Tea tree oil makes a great all-natural cleanser for your kitchen and bathrooms. Just add a few drops to some hot water and wipe down your counter tops for some great germ-killing action.
Due to its anti-fungal properties, it helps fight mold and mildew in your shower stall. I spray it on my shower curtains to fight off mold and mildew.
What about side effects from tea tree oil?
Although this is a natural oil, there are some precautions you need to be aware of:
1. Never eat or drink tea tree oil
2. Don't put tea tree oil in your eyes or ears
3. Just to be safe, don't use tea tree oil if you're pregnant or nursing
4. Keep tea tree oil away from babies, children and pets

How do you get the best tea tree oil?
1. Look at the % of Terpinen 4 OL in the tea tree oil you're buying. It should be listed in the ingredient list. You can get differents strengths - from 10% up to 40%. Generally, the higher the %, the stronger the tea tree oil's antiseptic properties.
2. Make sure it comes packaged in a dark, glass bottle. This protects the oil from light and air - reducing the chances for the oil to oxidize.
3. Is your tea tree oil come mixed with other oils? Some tea tree oils come bottled with eucalyptus oil, and other essential oils. If you want only 100% tea tree oil, make sure to check the label ingredients.

Tea tree oil is an astringent. If you have oily skin, it will help to remove some of the oil. It won't clog pores. It can also help eliminate pimples. You may find that it dries your skin too much, if that's the case, switch to a product which is milder.

Tea tree oil is used for many things. It keeps hair shiny and can help get rid of lice, or will keep them away. In face cleansers it helps make your skin soft and makes pores smaller. It also reduces the chance or acne and blotches.

"Tea Tree oil is a natural anti-septic (ie. kills a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungii) harvested from the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant native to the New South Wales region of Australia. It is an excellent topical first aid solution which is safe for most healing wounds (it has even been used to clean open surgical wounds). Because it is also a powerful organic solvent, it is able to dissolve white blood cells and pus inside a wound (allowing the tissue to heal with minimal scarring). This solvent nature also gives it its penetrative qualities."
It shouldn't clog your pores if you use it in moderate amounts. If its in a cleanser, its somewhat 'watered down' and won't cause a problem

it's used for all kinds of things, mostly though, it's an antiseptic. it's good for acne...doesn't clog pores, dandruff, bug bites, rashes, scrapes, cat scratches, etc. fleas and minor injuries on pets. don't get it in your eyes, or drink it. it's very similar to eucalyptus oil. comes from the australian melaleuca tree. hope this was helpful. ;O]
