I'm actually flattered to think of myself as a Pharisee. A little investigation into the Pharisaic beliefs shows them to be sensibly concerned with the Law and generally pretty rational.

Wow! Loaded question. I personally believe that their bigger issue was _not_ in fact the miracles themselves, but the fact that everything Jesus called the authority of the Law as they knew it into question.
For instance, Jesus' healings on the Sabbaths were not in fact the issue--the issue was that (in the case of the lame man) he asked the man he healed to "break" the Sabbath by picking up his sleeping bag and carrying it for a while; in the case of the blind man, it was that Jesus made pottery. No lie, the Pharisitical law forbid spitting on the ground and making clay, because that was considered potter making, which was considered work, which was forbidden on the Sabbath.
That in mind, I personally see lots of Pharisees in the world. Some of them are extreme-wing Christians (not necessarily only right- or left-wing--both, I believe, can be guilty of extreme legalism). I also see that many people who have no particular religious affiliation at all living according to their own strain of legalism.
That is a long way of saying, I don't really think we can determine the answer to the question.

Well in that connotation, yes I suppose you can view them that way.
But if Jesus came back today I think it would be the Religious and mostly the Christians calling for his CRUSTIFICTION and I think a lot of humanitarian Atheists would try and stop it or bring sense to people.
I certainly can't see an Atheist being like Peter and lying to get out of things.
If Atheists are anything, they are outspoken and don't give a hoot what you think or care.
I think they'd be the first to come to Jesus aid at a modern crusifiction, despite the religious overtones which they won't believe in, what they will oppose is an angry mob. Especially one lead by Pat Robertson!
They will AUTOMATICALLY smell something rotten in Denmark if he's leading the CRUSIFY him pack!
You know, if Jesus were here today he'd probably tend to some AIDS victims and that would totally rile Robertson and mystify the Atheists.

I have seen things people would not believe were real, many of them Christians!
Being and Atheist has nothing to do with anything you have referred to here.
You are looking for away to demonize thinking people that don't just swallow on command.
Ya' feel they are gaining a little ground do you?
I think the world of Jesus, but in no way do I see the bible or any of its cult off shoots such as the Book of Mormon as infallible!(said book is a travesty!)
I believe in the potential of science and I believe in looking at 'all' the possibilities critically!
I HAVE SEEN AND EXPERIENCED THE UNBELIEVABLE!
I don't assume anything!
Science and spirituality are not in conflict, dogma and science are in conflict!
Pure and true faith is not created out of blind faith. Blind faith is stupidity.
Atheists are good for the health of society, God knows what you have done with it in the past! Millions dead with no remorse. That is not the teaching of my dearly beloved Jesus.
Your bag of tricks depends very strongly on dehumanizing non-believers so you can do abominable things to them if they to not submit to 'your' will and feel fully justified!
read the book Turning Evil and learn about yourselves.
Earl... why would tending AIDS victims mystify Atheists? I was with you up to that point....
There is some nice info here.

No, read Matthew 23. The Pharisees of this time are clearly the fundamentalists.
The Pharisees believed in God. Fundamentalists believe in God. Atheists do not believe in God.
The Pharisees preached strict adherence to the laws. Fundamentalists preach strict adherence to the Bible. Atheists do not preach religious laws.
The Pharisees did not follow many of the laws that they preached, they were hypocrites. Fundamentalists do not follow much of the Bible they preach, they are hypocrites. (Ted Haggard, is just one who comes to mind.) Atheists pretty much follow what they preach.

Hardly. Pharisees were all spiritual fathers of their time. They believed that God's laws were open to interpretation. They believed in an afterlife. They believed that a messiah would come.
I think you know what atheists believe--or rather do not believe.

Actually, there is only one Christian branch of religion that is true. All the others are like the Pharisees and the Atheists are more like the gentiles.

We DIDN'T see the miracles of Jesus with our own eyes. He died 2000 years ago.

I fear it's far more accurate to describe the rigid literalists of today's Christian churches as the modern Pharisees.
