The case fan specs are:

Rated Voltage 12 Volts
Voltage Range 6.5 ~ 13.8 Volts
Input current 0.30 Amp Max
Input power 1.8 Watts Max
Rotation speed 1000 RPM

I have found a 5v to 12v DC-DC convertor from maplin, it all seems too simple, converting the 5v DC from the external USB port to 12v with a single chip http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=98174&doy=15m3#overview

This is going to be an external fan and i cannot utilise the 12v feed from the PSU.

Does this seem like an ok solution?

Thanks

The 5V line on the USB spec will supply enough power (since it's rated for 1 A, which is 5W), but your fan requires 1.8W (max) and you have a 1W converter. I would suggest you use at *least* a 2W converter, better even would be a 2.5W converter (leave yourself a bit of headroom) Digi-Key and Mouser both carry them for around $15.00

I seriously doubt the little 1W converter will even start the fan. You might get a little "bump" as the fan tries and move past the first PM field, but then it will stall.

Just read what you typed. You said you have a 1 watt converter and the fan needs 1.8 watts max ...
