Now THAT is a great question.
The people would have manifested their fears and troubles into their created god, and this god would reflect them (they are the image of god). Fear, worry and the other 'negative' emotions are far stronger than the 'positive' ones, so this would explain why their god was lonely, vengeful, and angry enough to create hell.
Is it humanity..... Yes and no. The 'negative' emotions are stronger than the positive ones so we do need to work at riding through the bad ones and enjoying the good ones. This is possible.

Where did that come from? God created us. Read Genesis Chapter 1. I have never considered God to be lonely. Now if you're talking about "gods" that is entirely different. Something made out of wood or stone is definitely lonely. It's wood and/or stone and yes people did create it. Kind of silly to worship something that isn't able to respond to you, isn't it? God is with us all the time and He is active in our lives. We can see that if we just acknowledge it.

Human society without God is just a society of monkeys, dogs, hogs, camels and @sses. Working hard like @sses and camels, having sex like monkeys and dogs, and eating like hogs, without caring of the divine creator.
The lifetime of such humans envious of God, passed at night either in sleeping or in sex indulgence, and in the daytime either in making money or maintaining family members. Human being means inquire about the Asolute Truth.
