Read Matthew 1:18.
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”
Compare now with Luke 1:26& 27.
“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.”
So in the miraculous birth of Jesus, Matthew mentioned the Holy Ghost and Luke mentioned the angel Gabriel. Who is the Holy Ghost then?

Matthew 1:18 and Luke 1:35 both state that the Holy Ghost the source of the conception. Not Gabriel.
The Holy Ghost is the third part of the Godhead.
Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Further on Luke mentions The Holy Spirit descending on Mary. The angel Gabriel was just the messenger who delivered the message to Mary about the incarnation. The Holy Spirit is GOD not an angel.

if you read the entire story, you will find thay gabriel, like all angels was just a messenger. he was only there to deliver a message. not to have sex with her..this is forbidden to angels..
mary was made to have a miraculous conception....by the presence of the spirit of god...(Holy Ghost) "over" her....this was completely spiritual, and not physical...but it had a physical result....
if you look in creation story...in genesis...the holy spirit was "over" the waters too... and miracle changes occured in the earth...
in both matthew and luke..... the angel is the messenger... and the holy ghost is God who creates the miracle.
the Holy spirit is part of the Godhead...the Father God, Jesus the son, and the holy spirit ( holy ghost)...both jesus and the holy spirit do the will of the Father God

NO, they are not one and the same.
Angels are created beings, much like we are,(both created beings, that is)
Angels are sent to proclaim messages, in this case the angel was sent to tell Mary what was to come. God is the holy ghost and God is whom impregnated Mary with a part of himself (Jesus). This is where we get the term trinity from, an easy one word explanation for God the father, Jesus the son and the comforter Holy Ghost. They are all parts of the whole and that is THe Great I AM God

Gabriel is an angel, ie, a MESSENGER. He got the permission slip. The Holy Spirit is a phase or Personality of God. Totally different. The Holy Spirit also indwells millions of modern Christians. You think a mere angel can do that?

They are different times. The angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her that God had chosen her to bring forth his Son, then the Holy Ghost came. They are two separate beings. Gabriel is the one bringing to news to Mary about Gods choice in her. The Holy Ghost was the one who brought about the change that brought conception. Two separate events, but to the same person.

uh, no. you can't logically conclude that the Holy Spirit and Gabriel are the same.
the Holy Spirit CREATED the 23 chromosomes of Jesus, while Gabriel was recorded TELLING Mary about it. they aren't the same, read the whole passage next time please, as when you isolate Scripture, misunderstandings are common...
