The Walter Reid stuff was exaggerated by the Post in an attempt to embarrass the President some more.

Fact is that military hospitals for active duty military are not aesthetic, but nearly the best treatment you can get. In order to maintain such level of service every hospital holds its own town meetings every week, where problems and discontent can be brought up.

Nothing was mentioned in town hall meetings at Walter Reid prior to Washington post story.

The VA gets the dregs of the officers and puts them into administrative positions. often these guys don't know beans about hospital admin so they they end up concentrating on head games to make themselves look good for the politicians. Also, when it comes to military spending, the VA is at the bottom of the list. My cousin who is an electronics tech certified to repair medical equipment, was volunteering his time to repair faulty heart monitors at a VA hospital. A new admin came in and accused my cousin of stealing the equipment from the VA that he was repairing. (the junk was 15 years old. ) He beat the rap, and it came out thet the admin was trying to look like he was "cracking down" on wasteful spending, to look good for a congressman.

Because they are underfunded. Agencies often became indifferent when they feel they cannot be effective. It is the "why bother" attitude.
