High maintenance for Jack Russell's means they DEMAND alot of attention. You remember the Kibbles commercial, where the little dog keeps jumping up and over the bulldog...
Jack russell's are sweet but very hyper. Just make sure you can devote enough time to exercise it.

What is meant by high maintenance is that they are very high strung. They need a lot of attention and will get upset if you go off and leave them alone. My dad who is now 83 decided after my mom passed away three years ago that he wanted a dog. He liked the appearance of the Jack Russel, so he got one about 1 +1/2 years old from a rescue. He had not had any problems with the dog, until he went off and left the dog in the house while at church. He came back to all of the blinds in the living room torn off the wall. The dog no longer lives with my dad. A good point about this breed and any other small high strung dog is if you must go off and leave the animal for any length of time to start while they are a pup and train them to go into a kennel or crate while you are gone. This will not only protect your belongings, but will possibly keep the dog from getting into something that might hurt him or her in your case. Some people think that crating a dog is cruel, but it's not. I raised Boston Terriers for a number of years and the crates became there personal beds at night and while i was gone to work. It really does protect the animal. Think about if the dog was able to get to any of your medications and chew up the bottle. what do you think would happen if they got to the medicine? Jack Russels are very bright and very active and they make a great pet. Keep yours safe.

The high Maintenance comes in with their energy. Keep them busy and give them something to chew on. It is like having a three year old on a sugar high. My girl is 11 years old and just now is starting to slow up a bit. One of the "bad" things is their fur. It is double coated and they shed continually. Lots of people don't like it and have tried various thing to lessen the hair problem. The best thing I found was a good set of stripping knives. Don't buy the cheap ones.I like the Mars brand but there are others just as good. I have one that I use on the body and a smaller version for the face and legs. They remove most of the dead hair. The birds enjoy it the most as they line their nest with it. I have a pair of morning dove that return every year and their nest is full of Sugar's hair. My girl knows 54 commands and many using voice or hand signals. She an escape artist as she has learned how to escape 3 different cages. So I only use one when we travel. She is also a digger and does not like cats or small animals. She has destroyed a lawn getting rid of a mole.

I'm glad to hear ur enjoying ur JR. They are a very intelligent and willing to please breed, but they can become little buggers if they get bored. I had a lil russell named Baylie, but she was hit by a car last august (a few wks after she turned 1 yr). Double, triple and quadruple check that there is absolutely no way out of ur yard...mine dug about 2 inches under our fence and wiggled her way out. Unfortunately she was hit and killed by a girl who used our street as the indy 500. Thank god it was instant and she didnt feel a thing! Enjoy ur puppy, she's got 14-16 fun filled yrs with u. Best of luck! :)

I am so glad you are having such luck with your JR. We have a 4 year old named Gidget Isabella and she is our life. She was such a good girl throughout her puppy stage. We cage trained her and she took to it very well. She's so good now, especially since we have no fence, that we can let her out and she doesn't run off or go out of the yard. JR's are VERY smart dogs and can quickly become a part of the family. Congratulations on your new baby!

I think you may have misunderstood "high maintanence". It doesn't mean theya re stupid or hard to house train. Jack Russells need alot of attenion and need to be kept occupied or they can become little mischief makers.
