I moved from a small town of about 300,000 to Nashville, TN seven years ago. At first I was lonely and lost all the time. Now I am preparing to return to my hometown. I own a house there and was always planning to return. But now that it is emminent I'm not sure it is what I want. I have family there and I miss being part of their lives regularly but I enjoy Nashville and am afraid I will miss it.

I think we all fear change to some degree or another. Fear of the unknown. You can always move again.

Yes same happened to me too. You change and the years go by but the students stay the same and you have outgrown them. You feel like you have stayed on at school too long.

Move away as you can never recapture that time in your life.

Go to another town which may be similar in character eg another uni town but you can discover it and all its attractions three years older.

I did just that. Looked at options, jobs and what is it about a place that makes me happy. I never regretted moving.

I am sure this happen to many people. Having loved a place before but not any more after returning usually mean the people themselves have changed, their idea of an ideal place differs with pass of time. The places can also have changed, architecture, environment, favorite places replaced by others not so interesting maybe....

I live abroad and many people have return to UK as they were 'homesick' for friends family etc. Then a couple of years later you see them back here. You have an image in your mind but things change.

It won't ever be the same. The place itself is not what you remember.
(lyrics from push, by the cure, sum it up pretty well)
"exactly the same clean room,
exactly the same clean bed,
but I've stayed away to long this time,
and I've got to big to fit this time ..."
