The room is an open plan living room 14 ft x 14ft with the wall also leading up to the bedroom. The house is only 15 yrs old and the plaster has chipped off in places. I've been quoted £420 but maybe I could even sort it out myself, if so whats the best way to get a smooth finish for painting?

ah..subject close to my heart...i am gradually having all of the walls done in my house.

my plasterer charges £200 per day...i once used a cheaper one..£100 per day and i lived to regret it...he made such a mess ... a trail of muck everywhere and i ended up in tears!

go for it...£420 for that amount of wall is a very good price and please dont tackle it yourself...plastering is a skill and you will really be happy once a professional has plastered for you.

it is also a lovely feeling when you look at your walls and they are perfect with no blemishes and chips...a perfect base for painting....good luck!!

I have done a fair amount of work on my house ranging from simple DIY/decorating through to replacement of windows/central heating.

The one thing I have always struggled with is large scale plastering. Small patch up jobs are simple enough but there is a true skill to plastering large areas. Personally, I'd get a professional to do it if you want a job you'd be happy with.

As for the price, I don't know. I have a mate who helps me when I need it and so I don't really know what the market rate would be. Shop around, ask a couple more plasterers.

Ya know plastering is fairly easy, you just need to prep the base wall. Read up on it and go for it.

In the US in the early 1900's people that had cracked plaster hung wall paper to cover it. I mean layers and layers of it.

I took 6 layers of paper off a wall and then found I was living in a crack house er uh cracked walls....I took my time removing the bad stuff and re-plastered and painted. when we sold the house the plaster walls were the reason it went for so much as most homes with plaster walls were re-done in sheetrock

Study up on replastering and you will see it is cheap and easy

Seriously, unless you know what your doing I wouldn't tackle it. It's really difficult to get it right and if you don't your left with a total mess! £420 sounds maybe a touch pricey but you should always get at least two quotes. Good luck.
